Call makers: what wood to use?

I'm cutting some timber on my place and was thinking of getting a duck call made from a piece of wood from my own land. What wood would be best? They are leaving the cedar due to lack of market but I don't know if that would be a good wood to make a call from. Any advice would be appreciated.

agreed with ^^^ but if you have any walnut, try to get the crotch (where it forks) many times it will have some nice figure. If any of the wood has a round growth (burl) save that section.

If you are using a plastic insert, you can pretty much use any wood for the barrel. If you are going to turn your own insert, use bodoc or walnut for the insert and pretty much any wood for the barrel.

Cedar makes a fine call, but is sort of unspectacular to look at....

also mamosa works good it is very dense and maple does good too! if you don't know what a mamosa is it has slick bark and palm looking leaves with pink flowers when it blooms, good luck!
