VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) -- A Mississippi man is charged with felony shoplifting over a can of Vienna sausage after authorities say it was his third offense.

The can cost $1.28. Police in Vicksburg said Friday that 50-year-old Earl L. Scriven was arrested Wednesday after a grocery store manager said he saw Scriven put the can in his pocket and walk out.

Police Lt. Bobby Stewart said Scriven was charged with a felony because it was his third shoplifting offense. State law normally classes shoplifting as a misdemeanor for amounts under $500, unless it's a third or subsequent offense.

Scriven was released from the Warren County Jail after posting $2,500 bond.

It wasn't immediately clear if Scriven had a lawyer. A phone number for Scriven wasn't immediately available.

Folks has gotten scared to handle these situations anymore and this is what you end up with..Money say's if that happened he wouldn't steal from that store again.

Naw. Todays world, he would sue the store. Win big. No longer homeless but store would go out of business trying to pay settlement!

A coworker had a brisket walk off this weekend. Had one on the smoker Saturday night for the game Sunday and went to look at it about 6am to check progress and it wasn't there. He asked if anyone had taken it off, and of course, no one had. So sometime between 11PM and 6AM the thing grew legs.

And THAT my friends is one of the main problems with this country today. Give him the sausage? Why not? We're giving away everything else these days. You know, it might be a little different if he asked nicely for it. But no, he stole it. A thief is a thief no matter what his social status in life is and should get what a thief deserves. Could be homeless? May be hungry? Does that justify stealing? What you are referring to is known as situational ethics. Situational ethics would have you believe it's ok to do something that is otherwise wrong based on the situation at hand. Wrong is wrong no matter what the situation. There is always a right way to do something. Will a butt kicking fix him? Maybe, maybe not. It sure wouldn't hurt though. There in lies another problem we have today, actions with no consequences. If there's no fear of repercussions for your actions, you will continue in your actions. It's the reason we have repeat offenders. It's high time this crap ended. I'll turn my soap box over to the next person now.

Well Driveby, I'm sure glad you got it figured out what the main thing wrong with our country today is. You nor I know anything of this individual's situation except what is a copied and pasted paragraph from a Georgia poster making a dig at Mississippians. Yeah he's a thief and there should be consequences and I'm certainly not advocating stealing but to say whoopin his ass is gonna fix him is crazy. My only point is we're going to spend $22,000 a year to house him in prison over a 1.25 can of vienna sausage. That's what's screwed up. If we would just whip all the criminals asses in Parchman then we could set em free and save the state a lot of money, huh? Where do you want to put these people? Our prisons are busting at the seams. We can always build more prisons but get ready to pay for it. No wait, you don't pay taxes for our prison system do you?
