I know a bunch of folks bowfish for big carp around the delta and NW Mississippi, but I was thinking about giving fly fishing for them a try. It's pretty popular in other parts of the county. I'm looking to sight fish for them in shallow water.
Looking to find out any information I can on locations where I could fish for them in the shallows. I live in the Memphis area, but travel to Jackson, MS and the delta a good bit, so any where in between would work.
I've seen some videos where people fish for them similar to fishing for tailing Redfish on the coast. I'm not looking to eat them, just hook a few 20+ lb fish.

Re: Carp fishing
You are talking to THE former state record grass carp record holder for the fly fishing category. Some "illegitimate child" beat it this summer. I know you're talking about common carp, I assume? There seems to be alot of growing popularity. If I'm not mistaken there are several fly kits out now exclusively for carp.

I'm looking for places to go. I've got all the gear, just looking for some places some folk know that hold carp, whether grass, mirror, or common.
Re: Carp fishing
Man, carp on the fly is too much fun! Don't know of any specific sloughs or creeks to point you to. But I'd think carp around your area would frequent the same types of water I've found them in. FInd shallow sloughs and wide flats near deep water. The bottom can be bare. You are looking for 1' - 3' of water. Should be able to find those conditions on several reservoirs and oxbows.
They are really spooky. Make long casts and hit them on the nose with the fly. Try Dave Whitlock's red squirrel nymph.

Never assume.

Try down at the Cutoff. We've had them big ugly bastards just jump in the boat with us. Of course, I know that's the Asian Carp or whatever, but I'm sure they'd be fun to catch on a flyrod too.
