i'd say its a black or black/mallard cross. 2nd one is definitely a mottled

I killed my first black this year. A pair came in and my buddy shot the male, I got the female. Both of those are going on the wall!

Beautiful black. Great mask on him/her. It is not uncommon to have a bit of white on the tiP of the speculum

I hunted some guys from Maryland a couple weeks ago and they claim that black ducks are their main kills up there. Way more common than mallards. Go figure.

Passed these photos on to some ornithologists at LSU. They think it may be a black x mallard hybrid. Do you still have it?

The LSU guys asked. I think they would like to take a closer look before definitively saying it is a hybrid.
