Motor Guide or Minn Kota?

Postby Don Miller in Birmingham » Sat Jan 31, 2004 10:34 pm

I'm looking to rig out my 1542 War Eagle for spring crappie fishing. Does anyone have a preferance on which brand of hand controled trolling motor?

Personally I like Minn Kota..However, if you don't mind driving to Starkville, MS..my buddy got a really good deal on a refurbished Motorguide at the factory (in Starkville)..Comes w/ original warranty etc...they also gave him an extension on his electric cord, and an extra prop..
I may go to Heaven, or I may go to hell....But one thing is for certain..It'll be after Duck season!!

Go with the MinnKota. Much quieter (real important when after those spawners), and in my opinion, more durable than the Motorguide. The all-terrian model is a good choice for duck hunters and crappie jerkers, you know how tough shallow water can be on a trolling motor.

I have had both. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

Look at the Minn Kota power drive. Comes with 18' remote control cord. INJ

Minn Kota. Especially down here in the salt.

Had a motorguide on a bass boat. Bent the shaft and had to have straightened. Supposedly the Minn Kota shafts dont bend. They'll flex but return. I havent had problems with the Minn Kota. Other than that I wouldnt have a preference because both seem good motors.

On response to Hyena, it will not bend, but I saw one break. In a tournament at Columbus, my partner hit a stump dead on pretty hard with that brand new Minn Kota, and SNAP! That was the end of our fishing.

But that is the only problem I have ever really seen with them. I wouldn't own one of those load you know what Motorguides!
