there is a noticeable difference betweent he nightforce and any leupold that ive ever looked through. I have learned that you definitely get what you pay for in optics

I'm looking at the same ones for a new long range rifle. Also considering zeiss.....post any pro's and cons you figure out.

I have three nightforce scopes and the NXS is sturdier than the benchrest models. That being said they are closer to 1800-2K. I have nothing but good things to say about the NF line. You might be able to find a used one for closer to 1200-1500. I have a 3.5-15 and a 5.5-22. They cost close to the same, weigh just about the same so...... I don't know why I have a 3.5-15 and not two 5.5's

Weight is about 31oz I think. two lbs.

The leupys are quality scopes and I don't have anything to say ill about them.

There is a place down in Hammond that has good prices. They are knowledgable as well. SportOptic or some such. Chris Wisecarver runs the joint. Great store if you get a chance to stop by.

Just don't look through a swaro whatever you do. Definitely next level They just don't have a tactical line with turrets. They do make a turret you can set for a specific load and MV but it isn't quite as useful as a regular tactical turret.

Can't go wrong with either. I've got a all Leupold LR's. I've got buds that have nothing but Night Force. Both are good scopes. I think you'll find that the NF is gonna be a bit higher than a Leupold for a "comparable" scope, at least in my experience. I know a guy that can get Leupold a good bit cheaper than most so I guess I'm biased.

I got Nf 5.5x22, swaro in 6x24 and zeis diavari. I like NF the best due to reticle. My brother just got a tactical Schmidt & bender. Now it's the $HIT, no joke. He has a great buy on leu tactical long range focal plane. He will sell it cheap. Let me know if interested.

With all the QC problems Leupold has had recently, I lean more toward finding a good deal on a Nightforce, a Zeiss, or maybe even consider Meopta. All 3 are solid scopes and you get what you pay for. Leupold has been slipping in terms of quality and dependability for about 10 years now and I just couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of money on something that I couldn't trust...

tell me more about the meopta, i can get it thru my distributor for dealer cost, can also get the leupold and zeiss. that is the reason i was asking is whether or not the nightforce is worth $800 more than what i can get the others for.

I have a 30mm tube leupold that i like but its not even close to the zeiss or swars that I have neither is the 30mm nikon monarch gold. I dont have a nightforce but have heard nothing but good things about them for long range. I dont think they have the low light capabilities that the zeiss and swars have.

My buddies say that the meopta are as good as their Swarovksi scopes , but I can not attest to that. Seems as though NF and S&B are the two that seem to hold a good portion of the market share. I have looked through the night force and shot with one a little bit. It was during the daylight so i really can't offer any info on the light gathering, but the guy who owned showed how well it tracked at 400 yds. He made several movements and then juust went to turning the turrets and put it back in the position he wanted it and it was right on. I guess it should be for that money.

I will say this about the NF, I have a friend that guided for quite a while in Northern BC (ram, mountain goat, elk and moose). Most of the guys that they guided had some deep pockets, shot custom guns with high-end optics. He said the NF scopes were the most likely to tear up in the field after being packed in on horseback and hiking up and down the terrain up there. S&B, Swarovski, Leupold and Zeiss seemed to fair better. There admittedly are obviously many unknown variables in my buddy's scenario that could complicate his conclusions.

Bottomline, when you are paying north of $1500 for a scope, you probably cannot go wrong with any of the top brands. I have also heard great things about the Meopta scopes. I believe they have the same glass as swarovski.

If'n I had the deep pockets, It would be a S&B for me.

Swarofski Z-6 with a ballastic rectile, but a Leupold is hard to beat.

Just as a reference, I will tell you this story. Buddy of mine has Leica binos and a Meopta on his 7 mag. Looking out of his shooting house with his Leicas across a field into the woodline, he sees a big bodied deer step out. He can see good horns but isn't sure if it's the deer he's after. Scopes the deer with his Meopta, he can not only see the deer, he starts couting points, kickers, tines, and phyiscal features that confirm this is indeed the deer he's after. Mind you this is right at last legal light and he's clearly defining antler and body characteristics at 200+ yards while the deer is still not completely in the open. Needless to say, the deer took a ride home in his truck that evening with a well placed heart shot...
