It Can Happen!

I hunted a buddy hunt this morning before we really get kicked off with our after Christmas hunts this morning with some friends. Ducks were everywhere before shooting time. Shooting time comes and a duck circles in and one of my group shoots it down and cripples it. I send my dog and tell the guy on the end to finish it off before it gets away and where the dog won't be chasing it all over the place. He shoots it and finishes it off. As I was getting up I hear a second shot. I didn't think anything about it. I get up and move closer to the guys and the shooter starts to scream, "I shot your dog". I didn't hear the dog yelp and she continued on her retrieve. and brought the duck back with no problems I can see. I pet her and get the duck and look down at my hand and it is covered in blood. This is not unusual because alot of the time she is covered in blood from the duck, but then I see some scratches on her head. I get the flashlight and take a good hard look, and she is shot. I freak out and the guy that shot her freaks out. I get her to the truck and get on the phone with my wife which I am lucky she is a vet. She is actually the vet. that saved the dog that was shot that was in the Clarion-Ledger a couple of years back. She told me to check a few things and get her to the house as fast as I can. I get her back and she checks her out through numerous test and she checks out ok, but real soar. She has about 15 pellet holes in her and is laid up for a while. So I guess the moral is, it could have been a lot worse than it turned out and when hunting always have a plan if it does happen to you and only you should shoot the cripples if your dog is on the water.
Sorry for the bad grammer as I am worn out from the day.

sounds like the pup got lucky, glad you weren't writing a sad story tonight, hope the pup gets better and fully recovers, almost laid a friend's dog out that broke out of the pit as i was swinging on a left to right decoying pintail, clicked the safety about the time the dog came into line of sight, if i hunt with a dog now and it's unruly acting i almost won't shoot unless it's well above us, long of the short glad the pup is gonna be ok and i'm sure your friend feels absolutely terrible about his lapse in judgment

Which one was it? Hope it was not Joe's mama.
My rule was always when the dog is in the water, all guns go on safety and point up until the dog returns. More ducks will fly later.

Glad she's gonna be ok. But yeah, when my dog is out, I am the only one allowed to shoot a cripple. As a matter of fact, that's a camp rule for everybody to follow in our pits.

I was expecting this story to end bad when I got to the part about the dog being shot. Glad it the dog's going to be okay. I was on a teal hunt a few years ago and saw a guy shoot his dog while trying to get him to mark a downed teal. I was scared to death the dog had been hurt bad but it didn't have any blood spot on it when it got back to the boats. The dog's owner said he didn't mean to hit the dog.

man i got a cold chill when i started reading this, glad it looks like your pups gonna be ok. and i will rip a man a new one if he shoots a crip over my dog, either i shoot the crip or it doesn't get shot and if it gets away from my lil meat dog, its my fault.

Rocky, was it Kit-dog (not the reverend)?
My only rule is no one shoots while my dog is in the water, especially while I am guiding (kids or "adults").
Glad she's alright!
