If a buck is close enough to hear the horns they will come ready to fight. I have my best luck sitting on the ground kicking up the leaves, making it sound as real as possible. Rattle too much and they will get spooked. Rattle about an hour after sun up and start with light sparring and then hit them hard lasting about 5 minutes then wait and watch. Don't rattle for at least an hour, if the wind is calm the sound will travel further than you think and it may take over 30 minutes for that buck to get to you.

never had much luck but will try it more this year. They usually come from downwind which is a problem. At least this is what the TV told me

do it from the ground close to a thicket, and whatever you do be facing downwind. try to pick a spot where you have some decent shooting lane dead downwind. rattle & grunt for 5 minutes then sit still for 5 or 10 minutes, if nothing hapens, move 200-300 yards and do it again. I would say that most deer that are going to come will come within the first minute of rattling. at my place in texas most of them would come within the first 20 seconds. they would run up full speed and stop about 20 yards downwind. they would sit there for about 3 seconds then haul booty. so be ready.

now's the time to do it. Pre-rut. Sometimes they came in fast. I have had them come in before I was done with my sequence (my dad was trying to get my attn to tell me to look out). It was really cool...

Do the rattling bags work or stick with antlers?

I use real antlers. My brother has used primos that are shaped like the real ones. Have had deer come to both. Make more noise than you think you should. You are imitating two 200 lbs animals in a shoving match.
