It Finally Came Together

Anden, my 6 yr old, is eat up with it. Ya'll may remember last year, he killed a doe and a small ten point, but a ten point for a five year old was pretty cool, non-the-less. All year he kept asking when it would be time for him to hunt. He saw me kill some nice bucks this year with my bow, and was getting a little agitated that he couldn't go.
At my camp, we voted out the early primitive weapon and youth seasons. We decided to keep it just like previous years seasons. So when he found out it was youth season 2 weekends ago, he was pretty hot that we couldn't go to the camp. So, i tried to calm the fire and we hunted behind my house Tuesday, Nov 9. A single deer came out and he's begging to drop the hammer. Looked like a medium sized doe. Gave him the green light and he layed it down. We walked over and it was a dang fawn that had just lost it's spots. I was dissappointed, but he didn't care. He said it was "just his size". I didn't see the humor in it, but i was proud for him and we took lots of pics with this 45 pounder.
Finally last weekend came and we were able to go to the camp. We went Saturday morning and afternoon, and Sunday morning and afternoon to one of my A1 buck holes. We didnt' see much at all. Sunday afternoon about 10 minutes before shooting time ends, another single deer walks up about 20 yards, he says he wants to shoot since we hadn't done any good the last 3 hunts and it looks like last years fawn(about 80 pounds). I told him to "do it", and it ran a little and flopped over. Walked over and it was another dang fawn that had just lost its spots. I'm questioning my ability now! I've killed a buncha deer, and i've NEVER killed a fawn...and now i've given my boy the green light on 2 in 5 days. So, i mustered up smiles and congrats (Cause he did his job) and told him we are through shooting does. It' s now "Bone Time" to break daddy's baby deer funk.
I picked him up from school yesterday eve and we hauled it to one of my food plots that was being hit pretty hard. We made a little cane blind and settled in about 4:00. At 4:45, 4 nice bucks just show up and start eating in the field. We pick out a nice one and i give him the green light at 98 yards with the little 223. Anden dropped that dude like a dirty rag. The funk was broken!! We hugged and called Popa (my dad) he brought the 4 wheeler. It was a good evening.
Turned out to be a fine little buck. It had a 16" spread and a touch under 21" beams. A monster in Anden's eyes. He asked me this morning when we were gonna go again...i just smiled.
