Foreman 400 Rear Axle

Postby edub20 » Sat Nov 13, 2010 8:32 pm

Anybody know a machine shop that can re-spline the rear axle where the ring gear sits? Honda wants friggin 400 bucks for a new axle and ring gear... ATV ain't worth but 1200 or so

Any one ever welded the ring gear straight on the axle?

On a side note has anyone ever hauled a deer outta the woods in reverse? I now have :D

I rewelded a 300 once. Never came loose as long as we ran that bike. Probably 5 or 6 years after we welded it. It held fine.

if the ring gear and axle are no good then why not weld it. you don't have anything to loose.

i put a new axle and rear diff on mine about 4 years ago for about $500 and that included the axle bearings and seal on the end of shaft.. i did it myself, wasn't hard...

axel come out the right side.. pull wheels and hub off.. slide axle to left. take brake off and slide axle out the right side.. unbolt shocks from tubes.. unbolt tubes from rear diff.. unbolt diff from drive line... takes about 2 hours time to do...

Thats what I'm thinking. I don't weld but pretty sure I can find someone to do it for me.

Ebay has the axle for 100 and ring gear for 110, I checked that out earlier. Still may try getting it welded though.

i was going to get just a ring gear for mine but couldn't get one to install and set it up; spacing, backlash, pre-load, and all sorts of stuff... so that's why i went new diff.. i drove it a year as a front wheeled drive... did good after i put a 90lb tractor weight on the front.... be for i did that i wouldn't climb a ant hill...

Weld it up. we had an 88 300 that we tried to distroy as kids, both hubs got welded on... Just make sure that the hub nut is tight before you weld and make dayum sure that its on on strait. The jake leg that welded ours on welded it crooked and it wobbled down the road.

Thanks for the offer Torch I'm going to need the ring gear also if i go that route don't wanna risk just replacing the axle and the ring gear chewing up the new axle.

I have never replaced the ring gear unless the gear itself was messed up. Those axles are designed to wear and not the ring gear.

my axle slipped inside gear... i removed it saw it still had splines on it... i put some jb weld on it and slid it back in... it held for little while but when it broke, it messed up splines on gear.. so i replaced...i got it all from Big Delta in Batesville... axle was $120 and rear diff was like $450... that was 3-4 years ago now..

I bought a completely rebuilt rear end off of ebay for my 450. Wanna say it was right at $200. Surely you can find a cheaper option.
