I shot a 35 the other day and it was pretty nice. You have more range with the 35. Id go with the wheelen because its a 200grain 30-06 basically.

I can't speak for the .35, but I shot a TC 45-70 today and it was sweet.

In order of ballistic superiority... 35 Whelen, 444 Marlin, 45-70...

Now if you want to go big time go 375 H&H that will just about take care of any thing on Earth short of Elephant, Rhino and Hippo.. :D

You don't need a pro hunter barrel in 444.. Just a Encore 444. Pro hunter barrels are just a little longer and fluted. You can get a Bergera Barrel for a little less money also.

If they ever release the new load for the 45/70 it's gonna walk circles around the .444. Hornady came up with a new load shooting a 250gr ballistic tip bullet for it but did not get it out in time. Ballistics are way superior to the .444 Marlin. There are still some issues with some .35 Whelens. T/C and H&R's seem to be having the most problems so far. Everyone seems to be playing with the ammo for now. New ammo for the .35 Whelen is scarce. Hornadys Superformance seems to be the best so far to date.

It does look impressive.. Can't find the ballistics on it yet though

The 35 Whelen is without a doubt the best choice. A 225 Grain Nosler Accubond, 2,800 FPS at muzzle, 1.9 inches high at 100 = dead on at 200 and 8" low at 300 makes one heck of primitive weapon (really a joke).

I bought the 444 barrel for the last primitive weapon season this past January due to not being able to get the 35 Whelen ammo. I bought the 35 Whelen earlier this year and stocked up on the ammo. The 35 Whelen Nosler ammo grouped hands down better than the Hornady 444. Of course different guns shoot different ammo different so others may have had different results.

For a quick comparison go to the Federal ammo sites
for 35 Whelen: http://www.federalpremium.com/products/ ... spx?id=329
for 45-70: http://www.federalpremium.com/products/ ... aspx?id=42

FPS, Energy Foot Pounds and accuracy are all hands down 35 Whelen.
