i have the measurements, but should I allow for some filling out? My pup is 70 or so lbs but is just 13 mo, and obvioiusly will put on some weight. Still looks like a baby deer. Any advice?

Buy one that fits him well. If the vest is to loose the likelyhood of getting caught in a snag will increase.

They only work if they are snug. Its just $30 or so. Get the one that fits the dog right now and replace it when it no longer fits or wears out.

I would get one that fits him good now too. But, as crazy as this sounds, my 5 year old female lab lost about 20 lbs from being on a strict diet last year and wore the same vest from the previous year. Believe it or not, she always came out dry as a bone where the vest covered her and it was pretty loose on her. I think they sort of suck to their body when they go in the water. I'm sure the dog would be more comfortable and safe in a good fitted one though. Just thought I would share that info.

It can be a little difficult to best fit a vest on a dog when it's not on the dog. I normally try to fit the neck and chest numbers and not worry as much about the stomach. If a dog is in good shape, the stomach part should be a little big anyway

. Personally, I recommend a vest with a zipper. They hold better than just velcro. My dog's vest has both and works like a charm. Good luck.

personally my dog wears her vest more for the protection from stobs and snags than for warmth or camo. i watched a guys prized bird dog a few years ago go in a cane thicket after a bird when he came out he wasn't right. a piece of cane had punctured his lung the dog died on way to vets. i will also never let my lab ride out of her box in the back of my truck again. the dogs are to valuable to not protect and care for as best we can. remember we are their masters AND PROTECTORS

Go duck hunting in some real "ducky" places like real duck hunters do and you will see why some dogs need a vest for extra protection...

Been there done that... only time my dog ever needed help was when he was wearing a vest and it hung him up in the brush, Swimming... had to get in a hurry and saved him that day... never again.
If your dog stays outside all the time he don't need no "topwater" dog vest. but on the other hand if it will make you happy by all means buy poochie a vest...

Will be using a vest on Dee this season because she just whelped a litter of pups. I personally dont care for the vest. Back in 97' I had to save my meat dog because she got hung on a log. She had a vest on to protect a surgery incision from the ice.
Now for someone saying get a "real" dog just cracks me up. I say to each his own, just be careful and pay attention to potential hazards.
"topwater, vest wearing dog, living in the house" regards!!

if you saw the timber on our lease you would know why he won't be going in there without something protecting his chest.
