Pre-Season off to a grinding holt.. Literally

Postby DeltaCotton12 » Fri Nov 05, 2010 12:28 pm

Loaded up the boat for some scouting this afternoon. I hadn't made it out of town before i felt the sudden jolt and the undoubted sound of a trailer riding on its axle. I grind into a parking lot to discover my wheel is gone and the small remains of bearings that have gone bad. My next question was, where is my tire and hub? I see a fella a hundred or so yards down the road looking my way and pointing behind his building. I walk down to him and he saw the whole ordeal. My bearing went out, the wheel and hub combo bounced forward, higher and higher. The wheel bounced off the roof of his establishment and continued into the rear of the building.

No one was hurt and no property was damaged. I was VERY lucky for sure.

Moral of the story, folks who are looking to tow boats this year, check and double check your bearings and all other equipment before the season starts. I am in the position to leave my boat and replace parts relatively easy. If his had happened headed down the highway, It would make this process much more difficult.

I am replacing 2 hubs and a U bolt on the trailer that was ground down by asphalt. Hopefully the Spindle is still alright.

It happens!

Here is a picture of our boat after a bowfishing tournament...it was a rough weekend!

Another shot of it, without the new and improved UV/Stencil film on my camera lens!

As for where our tire went, i'm not sure but I heard reports of an 18 wheeler careening out of control on State HWY 61 and taking out a truck of new born bunnies..but never could confirm it so I imagine its in a ditch somewhere.

Two words.

Grease gun.

Just kidding, I know it happens but our main cause of bearing failure on the farm was lack of grease.

That's just it. I recently bought one and packed both hubs. 1 hub has a bearing buddy 1.98 but the other hub just had a dust cover of a larger size. I was in route to buy the larger bearing buddy when this happened. Looks like the bearings were toast in the beginning. I'll be replacing both to remove all doubt.

The wheel is in fine shape. I was surprised considering its journey off a building.

good thing the boat didn't come off & go sliding off in the bushes. you would have never found it considering that fantastic stencil job it has. dodged a bullet that time.

dawgma, you were on the list of folks to call if i needed "other options" to get it back home

Tommy Crowly(sp?) with Sure Ride Trailers just East of Mathiston helped me out. He and his wife run the operation. I went in to buy 2 hubs and spent 45 minutes just talking to him. Great guy.
