Okay, fellas, let's test your knowledge of these moist-soil plants. I picked these today while talking a stroll through a pond I planted in rice in June. Some of the grasses were already growing when I planted the rice. Some of the other grasses and weeds sprouted during the growing period of the rice. All are wild/native.

1. What kind of seeds are these?


2. What kind of seedheads are on the left?


3. What is this and is it good for ducks?


4. What is this?


5. These two are family. What are they?


6. Good or bad and what are they? (Pink is different from white)

This stand of grass was about 6 feet tall in July. Sprouted in late April/early May and the drought finished it about August. This is what you see in first post on question #5. I bought some of it's cousin in 50 pound sacks and planted in other ponds, but this, God planted for free.


Dry conditions kept most of the fallen seed from sprouting, although some has resprouted, is about a foot tall and has put on another seedhead.


Lots of viable seed just waiting for a hungry bill to feed. Protected under a layer of matted stalks and leaves has kept it from being gobbled up by the blackbirds.

5. Millets or barnyard grass. Jap on the left, maybe chipewa on right.
6. Pink is annual smartweed, white is perrenial. Pink good, white not so much.

1 belongs to the white stuff in 6: curlytop ladysthumb or ladysthumb, an annual smartweed.

I was gonna guess the first one was palm grass cause i didn't have a clue.
