Breeding question??? Please offer some expert advice!!!

This is my first time to do this so if these questions seem elementary, please overlook and offer any advice or comments.
How do you know when the female is ready to breed? She has been spotting for four days now? I have been told that she will spot with some discharge for 7-9 days then she will be ready to take on a sire. How can I be sure not to miss her optimal breeding period? Like I mentioned so any advice or expert opinions will be appreciated. Thanx!!!

T-Bone,
Where is the male? Do you have him at the same location as the female? [/img]

I guess the reason that I am asking is because, If it were me, I would go ahead and put him in the pin with her. I mean why not? That is, unless he is somewhere where this cant be arranged due to the owner hunting with him or something like that.

The 11-14 days after spotting is your window. All dogs cycle differently but this is the norm.
Hope this helps

this breeding stuff is a hoot to watch. like i said in my original post, this is my first go around at the breeding thang so tell me if this is unusual. last nite my female yellow lab, Sadee, jumped on the male choc lab, Java, and rode him across the yard for about 10-15 yards. it was like she was telling him "this is how you are supposed to do it so get to it". both labs are virgins at this also. i hope he figures it out soon. she acts likes she is ready but he doesnt seem overly enthused. every once in a while he will give it smell and act somewhat interested but ......

I have seen that before when the female is an Alpha female. Is she a relatively dominant female (around othere female dogs). It is hilarious to watch and we were thinking the exact same thing as you were!

Is this her 1st heat? If so you should wait till her next heat. It seams to me from past experience that a momma is best after she is a little older . Just my 2 cents with out knowing the dog. But when they do lock up dont let her out for 10 days or so a litter can have more than 1 dad. She is still fertile for those days afterwards.
time frame

by chance
10-14 days after you notice the spotting. A rule of thumb is 7 days coming into heat, 7 days of optimum heat cycle, and 7 days of going out of heat. Sometimes live covers are better achieved by keeping the dogs apart for 48 hours and then putting them back together. Do not let them stay in the kennel together unsupervised. Dogs hafta kinda learn the breeding process even though instinct will get them through.

this is actually her third or maybe even her fourth time to come in. i have lost count. i passed on her last cycle because i didnt want winter time pups! well her sire is starting to get the hang of it, sorta. last nite he started pinning her down and becoming more aggressive but he is humping the wrong end. i guess he is going for a little foreplay....but all she does is lay there and has this "please hurry up and figure this thing out" look on her face! but i think they are starting to figure it out.

Dont leave them together over 45 min. to an hour , if he is trying for over an hour , well as the vet. said the gun might go off but there wont be any bullets in it. Try the 7 to 1 ,,,,,,7 out away from her and 1 in with her.
