From the MDWFP site

PRIMITIVE WEAPONS
"Primitive firearms" for the purpose of hunting deer, are defined as single or double barreled muzzle-loading rifles of at least .38 caliber; single shot, breech loading, cartridge rifles (.35 caliber or larger) and replicas, reproductions or reintroductions of those type rifles; and single or double-barreled muzzle-loading, shotguns with single ball or slug. All muzzle-loading Primitive Firearms must use black powder or a black powder substitute with either percussion caps or #209 shotgun primers or flintlock ignition. Breech loading single shot rifles must have exposed hammers and use metallic cartridges. Cartridges may be loaded either with black powder or modern smokeless powder. Scopes of any magnification are allowed on primitive weapons.

No...you cannot use a modern slug shooting shotgun...a shotgun is not a rifle. Single shot or double barrel muzzleloading or flintlock style shotguns may be used with a single ball or slug

You can use a 45-70 or similar single shot caliber rifle though. Alabama isn't the same as Mississippi, it blew my mind to know that you fella's can use a 45-70 instead of a muzzle loader. Although you can get more range and accuracy out of some of the modern muzzle loaders that's still pretty cool.

its definitely not as primitive as my first days shootin Dads ol Hawken, but there is still a big difference in shooting my 45-70 and my 30-06. Theres alot of shots that I passed last year with the 45-70 that I would have taken with the 06.

Yep they do, I don't know the brand/model of a close friend's muzzleloader.......but it will reach out there. He said it was fairly expensive though. I know it uses the smokeless powder.

Do not use smokeless powder in a muzzleloader. I dont give a rip what the manufacturer says. Take a look at these pics:

If these fools in MS keep deciding on how our seasons are setup, it will end up being a wide open season oct 1 - Jan 31.
