A bad night.....!
A bad night.....!
Some days are just harder than others. Last night, a friend of mine was shot and killed, along with his 17 year old son, in his own home by someone trying to rob them. I have known Bill Venable since we coached and taught together in the early '80's. His wife, Susan, taught with my wife for 11 years. When Susan went through a divorce, we fixed her up on a date with Billy who was also divorced. We were newlyweds together before we started families. I remember when both their kids were born; Bill, Jr. was christened two weeks before my daughter in our church and has grown up in the youth group with my daughter; we have been in the same Sunday School class for all these years with Susan and Billy. Then last night, as Billy was on his way home from coaching a wrestling match for his Tucker Tigers, some punk SOB followed him home, forced his way in the garage door, and when Billy tried to wrestle him back out the door to protect his wife and son who were upstairs, the "illegitimate child" shot him in the head. Billy had managed to push him back out the door, and when he heard the shot, Bill, Jr. charged down the stairs to protect his Dad. The intruder shot him though the heart as he charged at him.
Susan had the good sense to press the panic button on their alarm system and the sound panicked the guy into running into the woods behind the house. The police got there in no time, and sent a dog into the woods in front of them. The dog was about 15 yrds in front of the officers who were seaching when he saw the "illegitimate child" hiding in the bushes. The dog charged and was shot in the chest and leg. But that warning saved the officers. They returned fire and killed the SOB. The dog survived and is at home with the officer today. I wish I could say the same about Billy and Bill, Jr.
It is a bad, bad day! Pray for Susan Venable while she deals with this awful time and me as I have to try to figure out how to bury my friend Saturday.
