I,m not asking for spots......but what type of hunting (boat, fields, flooded timber,etc.) is offered at Mahannah and seriously is it worth the time?

It has all of those types of hunting..It used to be a lot of fun out there but like everywhere else it's slap full of people..With the new 5:30 rule this year it will be interesting to say the least..Just to many people and lots of places elsewhere for the ducks to go when the volleys start... I used to hunt there when the state first bought it. Had some fantastic hunts and some really slow ones. The good places are a real bitch to get into. The primary dependency is the water level in Steele Bayou. When it gets high, the shooting gets good and the crowd is spread out better. Do your scouting early so you can get the jump on your buddies. I don't know what the access rules are prior to the opener. Lot's of permit bow hunters and gun hunters right around now. Call the MDWPF before you check out the timber.

The best way to describe the hunting at Mahannah is crowded. Since it is one of the few places where you can see the hunting spots from the road, it draws a plethora of people who congregate in a few spots. My experience has been that it draws a great number of novice hunters (i.e. lots of robos and lots of very loud, incessant hail calls). One morning right after Christmas, I actually saw a guy taking decoys out of a box that still had wrapping paper on it. He was stringing the decoys in the blind. From the sound of it, I think he got his calls that morning as well. Give it a try and you'll quickly learn that it is a great place to go if you want to spike your blood pressure from increased stress and frustration.

I believe that they should have drawn hunts at mahannah. They should open up the sanctuary, therefore you could cut down on the number of people who hunts and hunting pressure on the birds. But I don't hunt WMA anymore, I'm just adding my 2 cents.

Soft Call: Did you ever figure out why that 870 of your's wouldn't hit the broad side of a barn? You remeber that hunt out at Mahannah don't you? Back in the old day's, when Mahannah used to be a great place to hunt. That first year when the WMA opened before they put up any signs and started advertising it to the whole country was great. Now it's become the world's biggest 4-wheel drive parking lot. Yikes!
