Men,
I think this is sprangletop. I hope it is anyway. I have a duckhole full of it, whatever it is. I apologize for the poor quality of the pictures. I only had a few minutes and I thought I did a better job.
Thoughts??

Possibly. Most sprangle top I've seen has a much fuller pannicle though. Fluffy is the best word I can think of to describe what I'm talking about. In any event its some type of millet and looks like you've got a good stand. Unless someone more knowledgeable chimes in I'd agree with sprangle top.

I don't think that's sprangletop.

J.W. said you were supposed to be the weed master, why can't you tell us what it is. All those years you spent in school and you are still asking stupid questions.

It's not barnyard or jungle rice. Possibly some type of cut grass. Maybe a Southern Cut Grass or Rice Cut Grass?

Stegall said you should ask a real biologist.

I think it could be rice cutgrass.

It could be rice cutgrass, but the seed just doesnt look right. Not sprangletop though.

I appreciate all of the HELPFUL responses (Stegall shut up and go see somebody down the hall).
I was counting on positive ID from somebody. I pay my annual dues every year just for situations like this and I can't get any definite answers. Can somebody pull T. Logan away from the deer thread. He is the only expert that can help me out I guess....
I am stumped. I was hoping for sprangletop, but didn't think it was. I have some barnyard grass, but this stuff has choked most of it out. If anybody else has any ideas please feel free.
Thanks,
Pond

It's a Panicum species of some kind. Could be fall panicum or several others. Better detailed pics of the inflorescence, ligule or lack thereof, and venation would help tremendously.

Panicum was my first thought as well, it just doesn't match up with any specimen or photo I have. Little better pics of stalk, leaf, were it can be keyed out easily.

I sent the pics to a post-doc botanist I work with. He can identify any plant known to man and said he needed to see better pics of the inflorescence to be sure which panicum it is. I was just passing along the info. This man is a plant guru and does work all over the world so I took his word for it.
