I am pretty sure it is an old tarnished brass reed.

German silver is an old name for nickel silver used Reelfoot calls in the "old" days. It is an alloy of nickel, copper and zinc. Phosphor bronze was/is used in Reelfoot style calls also. It is made up of copper and tin.

i actually saw a call just like this, i don't remember if it had the checkered pattern or not.
I was in an older mans house. and saw his lanyard hanging by the back door. it had 2 calls on it. i thought this call looked interesting so i asked him about it. he said man i've had that thing for years. he said that's my favorite one to use. he blew it some. he said that he replaced the reeds in it several times. but still works good. I haven't seen the old man since. i wonder if he knew that this thing was worth that amount (to someone at least) Of course i had no idea what it was since i'm relatively new to duck calls, and calling.
thats interesting you posted because i guess i woulda never known what i was actually looking at.
He had some other call, at first glance i thought it resembled a hand grenade in a way?

for exmaple you could kill a 4 greenheads (two banded), a mallard/black cross, and a mallard/gaddy cross and smash a hot blonde on the way back to the ramp and call it a hell of a day
