COLORADO ELK HUNT WITH PICS

Postby lipsplitter39654 » Thu Jun 24, 2010 3:24 pm

All the talk about elk hunting made me want to share my pics from last year. i got a bull last year on the first day on an over the counter license in Colorado with a rifle. My first elk hunt ever. I was lucky that day as there were 2 other guys with me and we hunted 6 more days and never saw another elk. I killed this elk in unit 83. I got drawn for a 3rd rifle season mule deer hunt in unit 82 in colorado this year. Can hardly wait, 3rd season starts Nov 6 and last nine days. We are hunting near La Veta in San Isabel National Forest. I saw so many huge mule deer last year that it was sickening. They would just stand there at 20 yards and stare you down. Prolly wont be so lucky since I have a tag this year. The big mountain in the background is Blanca Peak it is over 14,000 feet and is either the 2nd or 3rd highest peak in CO. We stayed at the base of it in Fort Garland. Had a blast.

Here are some pics from last year. Gets my blood flowing just thinking about it.

The elk would be an added bonus. I just want to wake up and see the snow covered rockied from a tent door. Beautiful picture. Maybe one day I will get to experience it. Thanks for sharing. Snow covered mountians is a great thought while it is sweltering here.
There will be a day....

it was my first time to ever even be in colorado. I had been to several western states, nevada, california, new mexico, arizona etc but never to colorado. I have a friend in my duck club who has been going out there for 30 years and he asked me to go with him. For the last few years he has killed a bull every year on opening day of the rifle season. This year he took me and I was the lucky one. If I live to be 100 years old it is a memory I will always cherish as it is something I have wanted to do for all of my life. Going back with the same guy for the mule deer hunt and can hardly wait. We could see Blanca Peak to one side and the continental divide in the horizon on the other side during the entire trip and it was one of the most beautiful sites i have ever seen. It came one helluva snow storm the first day there so everything was even more beautiful. The snow began to melt after a couple days which hurt the hunting as the elk move back into the higher country.

couple more pics to share. The first is of a mule deer that a local spanish guy killed. I talked with him at a local grocery store that processes game meat. He acted like it was no big deal and that he was just glad to have the meat. Not sure but I feel that this may be a top 10 B&C deer for CO. That is a yamaha Kodiak on the trailer to give you some reference as to how wide the horns were. Amazing.

The second pic is of a huge elk that a young kid, I think he was 12 shot. I saw this guy going down the highway and flagged him down to talk with him. The boy was asleep in the truck when we stopped to talk. This kid is ruined for life now. The pics dont do it justice it was a freaking monster.

The 3rd pic i thought was kind of neat. IT just simply shows a handheld GPS giving an elevation reading when we were hunting some of the higher ground near Trinchera Ranch.
