I am checkin into a lease near yazoo City and was hoping someone could give me some good advice. It is a corn field that DU has gone in and built a levee around it and the man is guaranteeing us water. But, this is the first year it is going to have water in it, is that gonna have an effect on how good the hole is gonna be? Also, is there a good concentration of ducks around that area? I'm not too familiar with it. I just dont want to pour a lot of money into a 5 acre field that isnt gonna produce ducks. Thanks for the help.

hey Jay, that will have to be a big decision left up to you... there are alot of ducks get that way, but who knows how they will accept that field the first season? may be good in the long haul if you can afford to stay there... good luck if you try... i'd rather put my monies in a safer bet....

Ducks are a migratory bird. They aint the smartest of creatures either. They do follow the same migration route year over year, and visit the same locations year after year ONLY because someone has provided them with what they need. The ducks go where their necessities are provided and since the birds are already going to be in your general area, then I would have to tell you that if it is not smack dab in the middle of downtown (if there is such a thing) Yazoo City, then yes it ought to produce birds. It is in a very good part of the state for attracting birds and if it does indeed have water as the landowner promises it will have ducks.

I used to shoot the ever living snot out of ducks in beanfields in Anguilla, which is about 30 miles from Yazoo City. It has historically been a pretty good area, although not as good as the north delta.

If that is the corn field next to the railroad tracks on 49east. Your will be disappointed if you pay more than a $100.00 per head. I passed that spot almost every other day last year and the most ducks I have ever seen there is about a dozen. and they all look like Gads to me.
Way to small to hold many ducks and you will not be able to shoot it more than once every two weeks without shooting it out.
Another thing to consider is that you have two Federal refuges and one state WMA within 15 miles of it.
Hope this helps.

I've got to agree with go24, I've never seen a duck in that part of the delta, and I've been looking.
The key point is DU did the work, so they will basically have say-so on what transpires on the land. It doesn't matter if it involves DU, WRP, etc., there are going to be catches. I know of two groups that have gotten substantial help from DU, WRP's, etc. and they have limitations that there is only morning hunting, limited number of hrs. they can hunt a week, etc. Like duckmen said, if there hasn't been any water there before it's gonna be hard to pull them in even with corn there.

Thanks for all your help, I went to look at the land today. It is an 80 acre corn field and he left 8 acres standing corn. It is not far from Panther Swamp and real close to Wolf Lake and Yazoo River. Is this a good location, etc? I have some pics of it if I can just figure out how to put em on here. Thanks again!

Jay, sounds like the south end of my hunting grounds. If it's near Panther, and it's in corn...get out your wallet and pay the man. How close to the airport; sounds like a little north and east of it to me.

Oops....too late ......350 other people saw your post about this place and 53 of those are within a 2 hr drive of there Oh hell, how'd they find out about it?
.....they're all stabbin' each other in the back, right now......tryin' to negotiate a "deal" with the owner. WHAT?... I never got the chance to talk to him, myself Maybe you could get your pictures loaded, sooner AND give GPS coordinates to insure that there's NO QUESTION which piece of property you're talkin' 'bout. 'Better luck next time!

I was waiting for some kind of smart @!3 remark. Thanks to all yall who tried to help a fellow MS duck hunter that has hunted public land all his life and wanted to make sure he was getting his money worth. This place is full of people with knowledge about every area of MS and are willing to help out. I forget that there are "others" that dont like to do anything but cut others down and act like they know it all. And Anatidae, as soon as I find the GPS I will let everyone know. And if it turns out good, maybe you could book a hunt with me.
