Malmason WMA McIntyre Scatters Draw
Malmason WMA McIntyre Scatters Draw
The Notice of Intent is a proposed rule change. Public comment will be accepted till the May 19th , 8:30 A.M., 1505 Eastover Drive, MDWFP Headquarters meeting where the WMA's Notices of Intent will become Final Notice and will become law.
The MDWFP has had complaints concerning safty of hunters, overcrowding, unethical hunting, ect.
Now is the time to write a letter to MDWFP, attn: Larry Castle, 1505 Eastover Dr., Jackson, Ms. 39211. Your letter should contain your suggestions to remedy any of the complaints or preceived complaints. The Draw is not a done deal. Rants and vents will not help the cause. Viable suggestions may help. As others have suggested bending a commissioner's ear couldn't hurt. e mails will be accepted, but I was told a letter is the best avenue.

I'm recomending the mandatory use of good quaility boat straps.

Personally my land is not near the Scatters, so I have nothing to gain (except maybe less dumbasses around town during duck season)
my POINT!

Re: Malmason WMA McIntyre Scatters Draw
Let it be known, this site is read by MDWFP biologists and officials. I got emails to prove it. They do see what people say here but direct contact with the department is your best and ONLY hope of a real dialogue.
I discussed with Ed Penny some ideas on last resort ideas before a draw. Ed told me SEND LETTERS. Ranting here and elsewhere does nothing. I have been conversing with individuals on getting momentum going to write letters. Between working 7 days a week I don't have much time to do much of anything extracurricular. However, after a talks with several folks it seems to me most aren't going to take it seriously. So why should I? Hell i don't even hardly hunt the place anymore. I wouldn't have half as much to gain from it not going draw as alot of other folks around here. Civility is your best means of averting, what I think, will- and is- turning into a distaster of monumental proportions for the waterfowling community. And I have made no bones about that here or to MDWFP officials.
I think a hp restriction or ban altogether would put the wma on the map as a premiere public hunting spot in the Mississippi flyway. It would tamp down oos'er intrusion as well. It will deter guys from coming down for 3 days and running and gunning because you can't run fast with two paddles and waders on. A little lesson to newbies coming to the sport on what it is to truly work for your birds. Hard work is a virtue, it's NEVER been a bad thing. Birds would be less disturbed it would work. Of course the 5:00 rule would have to be dropped. We had what would of been a jam up hole if not for the crappy season that was almost two miles in to walk. We had to pull up at the parking lot at 3:30 to have time to comfortably setup in time and have those precious few minutes to bs before the morning shoot-or lack of. There was no other way to get there except walk and you know what? Nobody ever came in on us.
Boys, hp restrictions or bans are the way to go. I stressed that the ban should only take place during hunting season as other folks utilize wmas during warmer months that may need motors. Each wma is different but Malmaison would certainly be fit for a rule like this.

Re: Malmason WMA McIntyre Scatters Draw
I have a viable solution. Pay- draws for out of staters for public hunting!!! same regs as normal for locals and strickly enforce the laws on the books especially boating safety!!!!
Any of youll ever hunt deer in Iowa? then you know what Im talking about. Pay your money, point system!!! and you cant go every year!! and this applies to public and private land!!
If the state of MS owns the game and manages it and we citizens pay taxes and lic. fees for this purpose than dont you think the citzens of MS should have a better shot at the game (like Iowa). Just one more quick thought.....without citizens there is no State of MS!!!

Re: Malmason WMA McIntyre Scatters Draw
Just got through writing Mr. Castle a two pay hand written letter on yeller legal pad paper.
The thing I stressed were if it goes to a draw, how will it be run? Will there be a stand by? Will it be for weekend only or everyday of the week or will there be some no hunting days?
The thought of a draw scares the chit out of me. If it's done by computer what's to keep animal rights activist/non-hunters and computer geeks with no intentions of hunting for putting in for the draw. Without a stand by I know for a fact that less than 25% will show up to hunt. At least that was the way it was at Mathews Brake this past season.
The recommendations I gave will more than likely fall on deaf ears but I gave them anyway.
1)Let hunters launch at midnight to avoid a free for all boat race at 5am.
2)Make the WMA a no wake zone during non-daylight hours
3)More law enforcement presence on the water not just at the boat ramp. In 34 years and around 1,100 hunts I've been checked on the water twice and one of them was by Federal Wardens from Duluth, MN. If there isn't a chance of getting checked on the water some folk are just not going to act right.
4)If it does go to a draw, which I strongly oppose, PLEASE have a stand by in place and make it weekends only.

Re: Malmason WMA McIntyre Scatters Draw
I do not hunt the Scatters but honestly i would if i got drawn.
A draw hurts the locals and helps the others is the way i see it.

Re: Malmason WMA McIntyre Scatters Draw
I dont hunt it either and dont plan to in the forseeable future. Im pretty much against any increased regulation in place, but i know the state has there reasons. I do put in for some of the deer draws and such, and the way MDWFP has it now is that its free to enter the draw. That is flawed because like Don said, whats to keep some tree hugger in New York from entering 1,000 times? I always put in for the President's Island bowhunt in TN. It has a nominal fee to do so, maybe $5 or something, and i think that is refunded if your not drawn. If there is going to be a draw, there needs to be a small, refundable fee to enter. That would cut much $#!+ out and only the folks that really wanted to hunt would enter. Of course if they did it like that, there would be folks screaming about the entry fee.
