I have been using box calls for years, but thought about getting a slate call. What are some that I should look at?

absolutely love the Primos freak. by far my favorite. that with a rosewood striker.

for real soft subtle clucks and yelps i like the H.S. Strut lil duece.

i've got close to 20 friction calls and time and time again these are the only 2 that get touched.

I use a call by a guy out of kentucky named bill purdy. He uses beautiful wood and his calls with his custom strikers have a great tone to them.

agreed!! i use the freak and love it except when its a lot of humidity in the air or on a rainy day then it tends not to want to cooperate. Just bought a custom slate from a guy out of benton and its got a nice higher pitch for them toms that like em young haha

run 'em all...see what you like.... seriously look at woodhaven, cody, and primos (love the power crystal it just works)...there are some really nice custom pots around too...I am sure I'm missing some....

Check out some of the custom guys. Most are priced close to the factory jobs, but you know who made it, and my experience has been the small shops take great pride in making sure each call is perfect. Magnolia Game Calls, David Halloran, Pat Strawser and Derrin Dawkins would all be at the top of my list. The first three have websites. Derrin is in South Carolina.

i've got an old cody (bought in '89 or '90) that still sounds great. finally got a few new strikers that brought new life back into it that i hasn't had in a long time. the original 2 piece bonded striker that came with it is really heavy to me, now that i've tried some new one piece strikers. still not sure about the bulb tip as it is the first time i've run one - has taken a while to get used to it. seems like i can get a wider variety of sounds out of my straight tips, than i can with the bulb tip.

A flare tip does well IMO for basic stuff, but they make different tips for a reason....

is it like a double reed duck call? gives the ability to sound like a turkey easily, but can't get really technical with it like straight end strikers?

That might be a good analogy...but it may be operator error as a slate is my most seldom used call.

Here are a couple that were part of trade with Gator. I can honestly say that they sound as good as they look and WILL be used heavily this comming season. _ I saw an article in this months MS SPORTSMAN magazine where the author said his go two calls were a box and slate and Preston Pittman said his two favorite go to calls were a mouth call and a slate.
