Anybody still using a smokepole?
Seems like most everyone has made the switch to the new guns. Who uses the old smokepoles?

depending on my mood, I have a TC encore .50 cal, thumbhole with a nikon bdc on it. Still not primitive in my opinion as I can shoot out to 250 with it.

Re: Anybody still using a smokepole?
Now when I say "smokepole" I am really referring to the older style with exposed primer. I realize these newer inlines are still smokepoles, if you will, but I'm looking for guys that are using the really old stuff, possibly even the flintlock guns.
I'm still using my TC White Mountain Carbine with iron sights. Never shot a deer with it, but I'm trying!
I did knock a hog down with it a few years back. Wish I could find my dad's old .50 Hawken.
Anybody using anything like that or older style guns?

On occasion. Dad's got an old something or other that Mom got him when they got married that I will borrow every now and then.

Re: Anybody still using a smokepole?
My dad and I used to hunt with them every other weekend til I was about 15 years old. I killed countless deer with a 45 caliber Hawken style that shot no. 11 primers a 325 gr(I think don't quote me on the bullet size) solid lead bullet with 70 grains of real black powder behind it, and never lost a single deer. Since we've upgraded to inlines(about 7 years ago) Traditions with 3x9-40 with 150 grains of pyrodex, a 295 powedbelts, and shotgun primers. I have shot 5 deer with it and only found 2. Karma is a biotch ain't it? I think I'm going to start toting that ol' rifle again next year.

Won't use any ML except my old Thompson Center Renegade. Iron sights, 90g pyrodex, buffalo bullet. Smackdown out to 80 yds or so.

50 Cal Omega with Nikon.
45 Cal Kentucky rifle that belonged to my Granddad. That barrel is so long and heavy it is a pain to hold.

Re: Anybody still using a smokepole?
50 cal Knight Wolverine II, certainly not their top of the line gun...one step up from their entry level gun "The American" I think??? Before that, I had another Wolverine, but prior to that I had an old hammer style gun from Bass Pro Shops that would ONLY shoot patched round balls accurately because of a 1:60 twist, may have been 1:48, either way, you had to shoot a patched round ball for it to hit a pie plate past 30 yards.
I'll be honest, I've only killed 1 deer with a ML and it was 2 seasons ago....a 130 lb button buck of all things. ??? Two big deer and 2 yearlings were feeding along on the ridge opposite me and I shot the bigger of the two "big" deer, and that's what I was rewarded with. I'm guessing it was a late LATE dropper from the year before and momma still hadn't run it off.

It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
