hip certifications

Postby HeKing » Fri Feb 19, 2010 1:19 pm

I know most people go through OFA for hip certs, and I they have a long history and are very well respected.

I was just curious if any of you guys had ever done the PennHIP certification. We were talking about it in class the other day and to me it sounds good. You can get your pup screened earlier, and have objective feedback on their hips.

A better question would probably if you all had ever heard of it.

Would you buy a pup out of parents that were certified through PennHIP and not OFA?

Here's a link to the website and lots of info on it:

I do both OFA and Penn Hip. OFA is more widely known, but Penn Hip is gaining in popularity. I believe Penn Hip to be the better predictor of hip health, but as of yet, they don't have an online database which is important to determine the hip health of the lines the dogs come from.... So, for now, I'll do both and wait for Penn hip to open their database to the public.

I would not have a problem with a Penn hip checked pup. Its pretty popular with some of the UK line breeders. It can be a little hard to understand without studying it, though.

I would consider a litter with PENN hip parents. I would have to do some research on the percentages. The OFA system of Dysplastic, Fair, Good and Excellent seems easier to understand.
