here is a good place. http://www.mdwfp.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=80232

It's essentially the same bill as was proposed last year.

A bill that will make major changes in Mississippi’s deer hunting seasons passed its first hurdle Thursday by clearing the House Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks Committee.

House Bill 1282, authored by committee chairman Blaine Eaton (D-Taylorsville), will now go before the full House for its consideration.

Under the legislation, future deer seasons would change to the following format:
* Archery: Oct. 1-Oct. 31.

* Primitive weapon/crossbow/archery: Nov. 1 to the Friday prior to Thanksgiving.

* With guns and with dogs: From the Saturday before Thanksgiving through December 1.

* With guns and without dogs: Dec. 2-Dec. 23.

* With guns and with dogs: Dec. 24 through a date that shall be fixed by the commission so as to provide a total of thirty-nine (39) days of hunting deer with guns and with dogs.

* With guns and without dogs: From the date established by the commission as the last day for hunting deer with guns and with dogs, and ending January 31.

The bill retains previous language to allow the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks to have a primitive weapon/archery season in southeast Mississippi from Feb. 1-Feb. 15.

The major changes are moving the primitive weapon season from the current Dec. 2-15 to the November period, and extending gun season through Jan. 31.

i likada new plan....

everything except possibly letting DMAPs use rifles in October to harvest anterless deer to help management.....if we can't kill enough does with guns from November 2 till Feb 1 we need to just hang it up.

Oh yeah, it'll never pass :?

Because I primarily bow hunt, it doesn't affect me that much.

that's why I had no clue. Thanks for the info.

From my point of view, I'll give you a good reason to complain. (remember primitive weapon includes 45-70's & such)

Deer in my area start rutting early-mid December. By then they have been hunted hard for about 3-4 weeks, and are starting to get wary (both does and bucks). By early January, the deer (again, both does & bucks) have primarily gone nocturnal, and sightings are drastically reduced.

Now you add another 2-3 weeks of hunting before the rut hits, I believe the deer will be even harder to see, let alone kill one. Sure, the occasional buck following a hot doe will make his presence seen in the daylight areas, but I think the sightings will be decreased a lot.

Plus, I am usually so far behind in getting food plots & stuff in, that I'm usually still planting stuff early November :P

Your bow only season would get shortened. Even though I rifle hunt as well, I love the archery only season (quiet in the woods and less pressure) and dont want to see 2 weeks of it turned into "45-70 season"
There will be a day....

it's a horrible idea and mississippi is headed in the wrong direction if they go with this.... we need a way shorter gun season not a longer one..... and with the new 45-70's & such, why even have a primitive weapon season?
