Fruit Trees

Where is a good place locally to buy fruit trees to set out? I would like some peach, fig, and pear trees. Big Boy loves him some preserves . Thanks

graft your own. find some proven trees and get you some root hormone.

Others can chime in, but one tip is that you need at min. a pair of pear trees to produce fruit, I think. My great grandfather once told me that and I always though it was true as he had a pair of canning pear trees that we'd rob pears from when picking up hay.

I think you are right about the pair of pear trees....I would lobve to hear more about grafting some....I know where some really good pear trees are. My great uncle's are the bomb for canning.

Do a search for grafting fruit trees or propagating fruit trees or call up your local extension office and see if anyone can give you some pointers. You could ask around and find someone that is doing this and ask them to giv eyou some pointers.

It also help to have a family member who is a horticulturist. The picture shows a cousin of mines property on the right. The house is his. The live oaks along the driveway all came from tree lines tha the dug up. The rows below the oaks are all oranges. The trees above the oaks are all pecans. Plus he has more behind his house. Across the street from him is his brother who is grafting trees also. Then in the top left of the picture, that's all figs in the front by the road and pecans in the back.

I've planted a ton of fruit trees, and the best survivability success I've had, has been from the ones I purchased from the garden center at Wal-Mart....but, don't skrimp---buy the biggest, tallest, healthiest ones they have....I've been eating pears and apples from the ones I planted three years ago!!!
