Hunted from 1:00 pm until dark this evening.......

Postby duck38866 » Sat Jan 09, 2010 9:10 pm

and didn't see anything. Only saw 1 squirrel. The deer just aint moving in my part of Monroe County. Usually on a Saturday in January when gun season is still open, I can sit on my stand and hear at least 30 different gun shots through the evening. I only heard 3 this evening. Something isn't right. What does everyone think is going on?
P.S. I'm also seeing more button bucks, spikes and 3 points than I have ever seen. I'm not seeing as many does as I have in the past. Again, what's going on?

Blue tongue. There were several deer found this Summer with blue tongue which hit the herd hard. The biologist talked about it at our fall meeting. One of the symptoms of a deer surviving blue tongue is abnormal hoof growth. Should have been some deer taken with some really weird hooves.

It should work itself out. The hard freeze this year will definitely be a plus to hopefully knock the mosquitoes back.

I killed a buck this year with (hoof sluffin)(sp) form of blue tongue. His hoofs had either
fallin/broken off or were grown out about twice the length. Don't know if thats what has
effected the herd(numbers) or what but my count has been cut down by atleast 75%.

I hunted from 9:30 yesterday morning until dark, I saw 13 different rack bucks and 9 does. What I saw was the deer were not moving as much due to the ice. Three of the bucks I saw were bedded down I watched them almost all day they would get up every two or so hours and feed around then lay back down. The does did about the same until around 1:30 when a young buck started to chase a little bit. Overall I believe the ice has these deer settled into their bedding areas and not moving far unless they have to.

Believe they are holding tight due to the weather. Killed one buck this year that had had blue tongue.
If it's a hen we know who killed it.
