I killed a nine point two years ago on opening day that was still in full velvet. The rack was soft and bloody too. Best deer I ever killed so I got him mounted and he looks awsome. I asked the game warden about him and was told that sometimes deer hang the balls on a fence, or damage them in a fight and stop losing their velvet when their racks come back but they still shed their antlers every year. This seems to prove the statement correct.

Matter of FACT it wasn't a joke. Hermaphrodite is exactly what they are called. To be exact, a hermaphrodite deer possesses both male and females sex organs/characteristics, which can commonly be showcased as a "racked doe". They grow antlers and never shed their velvet b/c of an absence of testicles which results in a lack testosterone production. Jus sayin...

I thought to be a hermaphrodite they had to have both male and female sexual organs, not just symptoms of an over-abundance of a male or female growth hormone.

hermaphrodite
adj : (biology) of animal or plant; having both male female
reproductive organs
[syn: hermaphroditic]
n : one having both male and female sexual characteristics and
organs;
at birth an unambiguous assignment of male or
female cannot be made

He said it didnt have any balls, That doesnt make it a hermaphrodite. You gave the definition which is self explanatory that it is not one. :roll:

Thank you. A cactus buck does not have female and male parts, therefore it is not a hermaphrodite. As I stated. I really was hopin it was a joke. guess not.

Ok buddy, here's the deal. A hermaphrodite possess both male and female sex CHARACTERISTICS and ORGANS. This definition does NOT mean that they possess ALL of the sex characteristics AND organs of both male and female, but rather that they possess AT LEAST one of each. Antlers are a male sex CHARACTERISTIC, genitals and a penis are male sex organs. It could have had a pecker without having any nuts, and also it could of had tits, a va-ja-ja, a uterus, etc to cover the female sex organs/characteristics. Therefore, this very well COULD HAVE BEEN a hermaphrodite. And for the record, this info comes from a fella called "Dr Deer" or Mr. James C. Kroll, knows a lot more than either of us, if you'd like to just ask him.
Also, the deer that was spoken of earlier that was killed in my area (same as hayes' area) was killed in Artesia and was referred to as a HERMAPHRODITE in the article about it if you would like a copy of it.

The term to describe this condition is cryptorchidism. The deer testicles fail to descend into the scrotum and therefore it does not produce enough testosterone. Please refer to the article by QDMA.
