decoy spread

So this is a big dispute between me and my buddy. There are 2 points that we cant seem to agree on. I would love to hear what yall have to say.

We hunt in a pond-like setting in the lower part of the MS Delta, on public land. It is about 200-300 yards long by 50-75 yards wide. There are 20ft trees that going all around the pond for about a quarter mile.

- First Argument - how many decoys should we throw out? I think that we should throw out about 12-18. He thinks we should throw out about 28-35.

- Second Argument - There are local woodies that fly all around there. He thinks that we should mix some woodie decoys in with the mallard decoys. I think that we should not.... but if we had to... throw 2 or 3 off to the side away from the normal spread.

who is right?

I think you are both right. Throw out 12 mallards in 3 groups of 4, and add 4 or 5 wood duck decoys off to the side but visable to the squealers flying their normal pattern.

I would throw out maybe 24-30 mallards early in the season with a few woodies away from the mallards but closer to the bank. Later in the season I would decrease the mallards down to about a dozen and make certain that the mallards are paired up together. And I would always have 6 or 7 wood ducks in the spread no matter what time of the year it is.

neither are right on either argument.
yall need to put out several spinners at different elevations. Start high & make them lower as you progress to the kill zone. that should work. if not, arm wrestle.

You need 26.5 decoys of which 10% should be woodies, 60% drake mallards and 30% hen mallards, spread out at least 22 yards apart and in 3 seperate groups.

Oh in case your wondering a Half decoy is one of them Butt Up thing a ma bobs..

Seriously if that is your biggest dispute then yall should just spilt up on each side of the pond do your own decoy spread, leave the call in your pocket and see who kills more.

If you're killing ducks now, don't do anything. If you're not killing ducks, do something different. I would suggest putting out 300 decoys with one small hole for the kill zone.
