Lost a gun in the water while duck hunting?

I know someone who did and they jumped in after it. Went under water and all. Needless to say after they found it, the hunt was over.

last year on opening morning while paddling in to the blind... borrowed a good magnet and retrieved it and a mag-lite. last time i went alone before daylite....

I have dropped two, one was on my very first duck hunting trip, It was my grandfathers Remington Sportsman 48 16ga. And the second time it happened to me was with a new 870, I had just loaded it and went to hang it on a hook in some timber when "SPLASH" I dug it up with my foot and it has worked fine ever since.

Get you a good 100 or 200 lb pull magnet. We sent 3 days searching for a buddies Mossberg in the Big Black, and I mean IN the river. We pulled off into some timber and the first tree we passed snatched his sling and SPLASH.

Sure have...was picking up decoys in my tube with the gun resting on the front of the tube. I was just touching the bottom of the slough with the toes when my 870 slid off into the water. The stock barely rested on my toe underwater so I told my friend to go get the Jeep (because I was about to get really wet and awfully cold), unbuckled the strap in the tube, and dropped straight down up to about my neck. I ended up grabbing the stock with both feet and doing a jackknife manuever that would have done a gymast proud to be able to grab the end of the gun. My friend was in shock at what had just occured and didn't move until I yelled at him in a trembling voice (freezing) to get moving.

Needless to say, I installed a strap on my gun soon after that happened.

NO But I know a guy that got so pissed off at his Browning B2000, that he threw it into the water out of Venice La. and told his friend that was hunting with him, "I'll shoot you if you try to go out and get that gun". I own the same gas operated gun and asked him when the last time he cleaned the piston and he said,"What piston"! 'Nuff said I told him.

Funny you should ask. Mine has managed to go swimming at least once during the season the past two or three years. I'll be picking up decoys or something and it just falls out of the crotch or bush I'd shoved it into. Sad thing is, I still haven't put a sling on it. Fortunately, it only likes shallow water. Never had a problem with after its dunking though. Gotta love those 870s.

New year's Day, about 25 years ago, my Model 12 was laying across the boat seats as we tossed out decoys. Brother went to throw a decoy, and was holding the decoy in one hand and the anchor line in the other. As he tossed it, the anchor wrapped around the gun and "Sploosh" in it went. Ran my arm to the shoulder trying to grab it. Failed. Found and hired a commercial mussel diver who said he could get it (it was in about five feet of water). Did I mention it was about 20 degrees with skim ice? Well, he was blue from the boat ride and slid off into the water and promptly got so cold he went numb and said he couldn't feel the bottom. He was gonna feel it with his feet, then pop down and get it. We took him back to the truck. By the time he got to the truck, he in full-blown hypothermia, shivering, incoherent, etc. Later that night we went out with a large magnet and pulled it up. Shot that gun until I had to switch to steel.

We now use a carabiner and piece of rope to clip our guns into the boat so that even in the event we flip the boat, the guns will be with the boat.

I pulled a real smart move and laid my 870 across a frost-covered log early one morning last year. Of course it slid off as soon as I turned to pick it back up. About 2 minutes later my flashlight took a dive also. Son of a gun was still shining under water. Good thing was that the water was only a little over arm-length deep. Took the barrel off the 870 and everything checked out okay...never missed a beat. On the same morning on the way out, I tripped over a log and took a dip,meself,oh yea,refreshing!

I think dropping your gun is a lot like falling in.... if you duck hunt long enough it's gonna happen.(especially if your as big a clutz as I am)

Things I've dropped (or seen dropped) in the water: Me, guns, calls, shells, gloves, coat, keys, hunting buddies, shock collars, collar controler, flashlights (easy to find if its on), sun glasses, perscription glasses, worst of all.... the boat motor

I have never dropped my duck gun. Have seen several others dropped and all have been retreived and are working fine. I did fill the end of a deer rifle up with mud once.

Mine has fallen off of a decoy sack full of decoys several times, got lucky every time though. First time the sling hung on a pintail decoy's tail, and all the rest of the times I had it in a floating gun case. Moral of the story, don't lay your gun on top of a decoy sack, it will roll over.

no, but did have a cousin ,when coon hunting ,we stripped down to underwear and swam a creek to get to the dogs about 30 yards from the creek,got back to the creek and then remembered he left the remington 22 at the tree and that was 6 years ago and as far as I know it is still there, did I mention it was about 20 degrees that night talk about major shrinkage

My hunting buddy "COMEBACK" dropped his years back and it came out cleaner than when it went in...
