My dog has a serious issue of jumping the gun. Any pointers?? He is a great dog and birdey as heck, thats pretty much the only issue. He did great the opening weekend, but jumped as the gun raised this weekend, need to get it fixed could easily screw up a good hunt.
Thanks for the input!

by jumping do you mean breaking before the shot. If thats the case then you need to tie your dog up so that it doesn't happen and work on making him wait while you work him at home. If you let him keep doing it then the harder it will be to stop. take him out in the yard and put a leash of some kind on him and get him beside you and stand on the leash so that he has a little bit of slack. Have a buddy throw a bird while you shoot the gun and when he tries to break he will get stopped by the leash. then just tell him no whenever he tries to go early and don't let him get the retrieve. ONly let him get the bird when he sits still. This is fairly easy to train but if you have a young dog i would recommend tieing him up until he gets used to the hunting situation.

+1 on the tie up. I have a 4 1/2 year old female who is almost flawless in the yard training, but she sometimes breaks in the duck hole when the birds start flying and the guns start shooting. I just put a leash on her and tie it to the dog stand. She doesn't even attempt to break then because she knows it's on her.

I always tie up my dogs the first time or two hunting just for my peace of mind. If you have some buddies to train witha few times go to a pond and set up like you are hunting (multiple people with guns and decoys and calling) get him as hyped as you can and shoot a bunch. If he breaks you ge you correction in.
