What are your suggestions on a youth rifle? I'm looking to buy one for my kids. I'm thinking a .243 or 6mm. Any other calibers you recommend?

Hard to beat a .260 or 7mm-08.

Man whats with all this youth rifle stuff. My first and last rifle was a normal sized .270...i developed "0" shooting problems, like to shoot, and can shoot pretty darn good....well thats my opion anyway.

260 was my vote for my son. Still is. He nicknamed it the whackerstacker.

You'll get all kinds of opinions. Use them to make an informed decision and pick which one you think is best for your situation.

I have a 2 243s, a 6mm and 7mm08... They are all good shooting guns and plenty for any deer country..

If I had to pick on on sheer performance I would go with the 6mm, but because bullets are hard to find and there are few choices when you do find them.. Your better off going with the 7mm-08 or 243...

The 243 is a flat out shooter.. You will have more and better bullet choices with the 243 for a LOT less money.. I love my 7mm-08 but if I had to choose I would go with the 243.. Been shooting it for 20 years and it has never let me down..

if you want to come by the house and check out a couple of different guns come on by.. I'll even let you take one out and try it out if you want.

I am wanting a gun that fits a kid (length and weight) as well.

Wife shoots a 20 gauge Mossberg Super Bantam with a rifled ported and scoped barrel. EZ Reach forearm and removable peice of synthetic stock made it the only shotgun she looked comfortable with. Ported barrel reduced the recoil of a lightwieght gun to near nothing. Not a rifle, but, a descent 1 gun kill everthing deal. The new Honady slugs are FREAKIN" awsome....inside 150=dead dear. My boy can shoot my .270 with Remington managed recoil ammo easy...they shoot straight as well

I had my choices down to a 243 or 7mm08 and ended up buying a Ruger youth model 243 from Torch on here. I got some 100 grain Federal Premium with Nosler Partitions and that is one fine shooting gun. At 100 yards you can't tell which bullet made which hole. I may look for a 7mm08 for my Encore Pro Hunter. You may want to look at that. The stocks on the pro hunter seem short and have a real good feel. If you like that.....all you have to do is buy a different caliber barrel as he gets older. That's what I plan on doing for my two boys.

I'm leaning towards the .243, especially the Rossi that comes with a 20 gauge and .22 barrel. Have any of y'all had any experience with that gun?

7mm 08 with a 120 gram bullet. Doesnt kick much but will drop the deer within 50 yds.

I bought one of those for my niece for a christmas present several years back. The only problem with it was that they had put an extra piece on the hammer and it would hit the bottom of the scope when you pulled the trigger. It slowed the hammer down just enough that it wouldn't fire. Just had to remove that little "hammer assist" and it works fine. Her's was actually the .223/20 guage/22 combo.

I know people with the rossi and they talk about how bad it kicks. I bought the h&r youth 243 this year for my son he is 6 and weighs about 50lbs. I reload reduced loads for him and he has killed 2 deer this year, neither going over 40 yards. I have a ultra light ruger 243 I have had for over 20 years and still use some. People are using the 08 more these days because of the ability to use heavier bullets bit I still like the 243 for younger kids.

My 7 yr old daughter who weighs about 45lbs shoots the rossi 223 single shot. We have shot it out of the stand at targets and at a deer. (one shot, one kill, 110yds ) and she has never complained about recoil. With that being said, THERE IS NO WAY I WOULD LET HER SHOOT IT WITH THE 20 gauge barrel. It would knock her for a flip.
