According to their website, they are different animals.....I need my Hevi-Steel, serious range with those shells
Q: What is the difference between HEVI-Steel® and HEVI-Metal™?
A: HEVI-Steel® is designed to give a hunter more lethal range than he can get from regular steel shotshells, using higher density shot. HEVI-Metal™ is designed to give a hunter more lethal pellets on target than he can get from regular steel shotshells, using smaller high density shot. The two shells are designed to do different things. HEVI-Metal™ is more lethal at normal shooting ranges (out to 40 yards for ducks). Other HEVI-Shot® products are more lethal as the shooting range goes further out.
Q: Are the pellets in the new HEVI-Metal™ the same as in HEVI-Steel®?
A: No. HEVI-Metal™ shells use a layer of large steel balls beneath a layer of lethal high-density balls. All of the pellets have the approximately the same ballistic performance and lethality – there are just many more of them in HEVI-Metal™ shells than in any other shells. The high-density pellets weigh less than the steel pellets, but have less wind resistance, so they carry lethal energy out to 40 yards and beyond (for the larger sizes). Couple that advantage to our larger wads, and you can see how we get more pellets into the shotshell.
By contrast, HEVI-Steel® pellets all have the same density, about 20% denser than steel.

The reason I said it was replaced because I didn't see it on the Hevi Shot website for the 2009 product line up.

Hevi Steel is still available in stores from last years leftovers, but from what I have received in email notifications, Environ Metal is no longer making Hevi Steel. Hevi Metal is the replacement and is sort of like Federal's Black Cloud.
