My first was a winchester 120 youth. This christmas it will be 20 yrs old.
Thousands of shells run through it and not the first problem. I would highly recomend it if they still make them.

Can't go wrong with Remington auto 1100/1187. You can replace the youth stock as he gets bigger. I just sold one and bought a 20ga Nova, which I really like, but I don't think they (Benelli) make a youth model. A 3" chamber would be nice to have for turkeys and ducks as well. Good Luck to the lucky young man. INJ

I got my daughter a 1100 youth. I really enjoy shooting it.

I don't know if it comes in 20 gauge, but i've always thought the Reminton
870 was a tough gun to beat for the money.

The 303 was the model replaced by the 390. You can pick them up for around $400 NIB. That is what my wife was shooting in your dove field.
