Homemade Dog Box

Postby erikhsuval » Thu Sep 24, 2009 12:45 pm

I wanted to post this with some pictures because I had some trouble finding pictures/plans for some homemade dogboxes when I decided I wanted to attempt to build one. I spent about $130 dollars in Materials from Home Depot which I'll list below. Hope this helps those of you that want to do some DIY on your dog box. Hope this helps

3 sheets of Treated 1/2 inch Plywood $22.00/ sheet
14 8ft 2x2 pine (non treated) $2.50/ piece
2 10ft drip guards $2.75/ piece
2 sheets of galvazied steel $6.50/ piece
1 roll of chicken wire $6.00
1 tube of slycone $3.75
hinges and gate latch $16.00

Erik i got some latches like that on the box on my trailer. make sure you always put something in it to keep it closed. Its a bad feeling to be driving and see one of your dogs poking his head up over the bedrails! travis

I haven't decided yet I think I'm just going to stain it darker because of the galvized steel I don't know what color would go good with that. My wifes Brother actually did the building so I can't really take credit for it.

Travis I know what you mean I actually slip a caribeaner in there or if I'm going to be somewhere public I'll padlock it. I came up to Flora the past weekend to check out my first hunt test, I was hoping to meet you but I was lost and didn't know where to go really. I watched mostly started test since thats what I'll be doing first, hopefully I'll get a chance to meet you soon.

Welp, dang... I didnt get to go to started after friday afternoon. they where done before I ever got done either day, so we didnt cross. But dont worry, you hang around this stuff we'll meet.

Id be afraid of the temp of anything darker. Darker you go, the more heat its gonna hold. And heat is an issue a lot more than cold ever will be. travis

I was a little worried about the heat and if this box would vent enough. I put a window in the partition as well, but figured next spring with it being plywood I would install some fans in the top pretty easy. I do have those fans I got from an online site that operates on batteries that seems to work ok too.

Looks pretty good. If you are looking for a fan what seems to work the best is to get a bilge blower from a boat supply store. Then wire it into the truck. Set it up where it draws the air out of the box and pulls new air into it. They move more air than anything else we have been able to get. Good luck with your dog.
