I am planning on flooding and hunting a cut corn field. It's alot of corn out in the field, the seed is plentiful. Anyone have tips on flooding and hunting it? I plan on hunting geese and ducks. Mainly ducks though. When should I start pumping? Any tactics or tips? I have never hunted duck or geese much. I have never hunted flooded corn fields at all. All tips, replies, and comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone.

If the field is a proven duck hole, it want be any problem. If it is just a field that you have built a levee and can hold water then that is another problem.

Let's take the latter, I would put water on it around the 5th to the 10th of Nov. Let it hold some ducks. If it is as much food as you say then those ducks will be back. There is nothing like hunting a corn field where the ducks have been feeding. You can carry a dip net. What ever you do you have got to get ducks to use the field.

Let's say it's in a good place and your just concerned about rotting the seed.

I'd flood one week before the season about 10% and increase that flood about 10% a week throughout the season. Or whatever ratio would allow to to cover the entire field with about 2 weeks of the season left.

Ducks want a pothole, but will dry feed out from that.

The key is what DD was refering to. You got to manage the numbers, or duck usage. In a flooded corn field in a good location, if you don't limit out in 1 hour you shouldn't have hunted it. Wait on the birds and get out quick and you'll be able to go back quicker. When you have enough experience you can shoot it all day when you know their gonna' blow out with the weather, but that's after you have a PhD in watefowlin'.

Corn will rot so don't waste it.

I don't know about in MS., but in SC it is against the law to flood a harvested field for the purpose of hunting waterfowl. I believe this is a Federal Law.

I would not flood it until after Christmas. Geese really won't eat corn until it gets cold. I would hunt it late in the season.
