The sign of the season
As the sun set low on the marsh today I stopped to watch an egret stalk minnows on the waters edge. Captivated by the stealthy stalk as he made his way through the tangled weeds. A great blue heron flew over head and the popping sounds in the floating grass beds could only be those big copper nose for sure. I searched the skies for that prized early season bluewing. As the sun set low in the west I was startled by the ripping sound of air from behind. I gathered myself after bumping my paddle on the side of my pirouge breaking the silence of the marsh. Shortly there after I heard the throaty barking of the marsh hen. Followed by a faint rolling thunder from the north. One Mississippi, two Mississippi and on and on. The sky flashed with distant lightning. Plenty far away for me not to worry. I made my way down the crooked channel through the scatterd marsh and there they were with heads held high. One, two three, four and what looked as if a dozen more making there way around another bend. I knew they saw me as I did them. There heads moving quickly watching the waters edge and back to me. What a feeling. Rest my feathered friends for I surely will have a treat for you.
