I'd go with a Dell. Go to their website, they have some good deals on laptops right now.

Toshiba satellite. For less than 500 bucks you can get a 3 or 4 gb of ram, and 320gb memory. They also come with a web cam built it if you use skype. Great computers.

I bought my wife a Toshiba Satellite a year ago when we were looking to replace her Dell and we both love it. Her's does have the wider screen, but I don't find the whole unit is all that heavy. I'd certainly look at either a Toshiba or Lenovo.
Not that I don't like Dell, but our desktops here at work usually last 2-3 years before something fails, and lately it's been HDD failure. MY wife had a 54something Dell laptop and from day one it would give her problems. Known heatsink issues. Now I'm running an old backup Dell 16something that was given to me and it's yet to give any problems. Mine must be 4 or 5 years old as it belong to a cabinet maker and he gave it to me for helping him with his computer stuff.

Is that with a Pentium or AMD?

Good old Windows 7 is about to come out and fix all of Vista's blunders

7 is really just trimmed down vista and it still sucks!
I got the Wife a dell 1545 inspiron for around $620 back in April, it was as loaded out as she needed core 2 duo 2.4ghz, 3gb DDR2 1300mhz 250gb HD, HD monitor, etc...(mainly surfing the net and doing a little multitasking. Came with Vista but loaded XP Pro on that joker as soon as it came through the door.

I think the one at best buy that is $550 is only $499 at office depot right now. I know because we are about to get my wife a new one.

Companies advertise price match policies, but the kicker is that the model numbers rarely match so they rarely have to price match.
Office Depot has a L505-S6959 that is $699.99 and a L505-S5957 that is $499.99. Both are Intel based and the 6959 is 16" and the 5957 is 15.4". I feel your pain on shopping though. I did the same thing and even brought Office Depot cards to Best Buy with me to compare hardware and prices. Oh, Best Buy was even advertising in the weekly sale paper at the time that wasn't even in their store. They claimed it was a mis-print the sales paper.

I will have to agree. I've had mine for a few years and other than a virus, I have had no hardware issues.
Toshiba, HP, Acer, Levonne(sp) all have nice computers for the money.
