ok, got a ? for all you experienced field hunters out there. Most of my hunting has taken place in the marsh where there's plenty of cover, (marsh grass, tall weeds) or in timber. But this year we've got a rice field lease, I was figuring on using a ground blind,(coffin box or something like that). Anyway, to the point I have a young black lab that is really hyper, I just don't know if I can make her lie there motionless the whole time while ducks are circleing the spread. Any ideas other than keep working w/her?

I think should go any where you have duck now and let her watch. Put your self in a hunting situation. The key is let her see the birds work. I think you will be surprised how she is focused on the birds.
Good Luck!!

by chance
My old huntin partner, the one and only GooseBruce took one of them stick-in-the-ground tie-out stakes and kept fatdawg tied to it. I showed him how to make a doggy blind to keep the dog covered. The doggy blind takes a little imagination because some dogs get to moving around a bunch to see the action. They will even try to get out of it.
It don't take much equipment to build the doggy blind. I usually keep my stuff in my coffin blind when I am moving around.
I suggest you work with your dog some b/4 season opens to get him used to it. Ours work real well. Good luck with the dog this year.

I put my young dog on a short lead for her first hunt. This hunt was in a rice field with a pit blind. The folks had dog boxes on the end. She did great except she hated to get into the box. The short line kept her minding her manners!

Blacklab I hunt out of a mummy boat 75% of the time in fields what I found that works best is what I call a dog pit it consist of a plastic 55 gal drum cut in half ; then cut out a door in the front, paint it black fasten a rubber strap to the top of it so you can bundle up some straw to hide the dog. most labs are clean dogs and most of the time they like sitting in the clean barrel vs a cold wet muddy ass rice field.

I'd rather sit in a barrel too, and I'm not a clean dog. I just don't like the thought putting my plumbing in freezing water..my guess is neither does a dog
