HT Handlers....

Postby flyntwt » Sat Jul 11, 2009 9:08 am

Which HT pro do you like watching run tests-whether it be their talent, the talent of the dogs on their truck, whatever.... When you are at a test who do stay around to watch or make a point to go see?

I rarely go to hunt tests but I really like talking to copiah creek. Not that I don't like talking to anybody else but he will open up a lot and help you along the way. Any question I have asked him he has always been helpful to me.

I am sure that there are others that I am just not thinking about, but I like to watch Chuck McCall and Ed Thibidaux run dogs. If Jay Dufour or Jimmy Wilson are running, I will usually try to find them and talk to them, even if I can't see them run since they have always been such nice guys. Seems like I am always in a different flight from Mr. Creek, who I will go out of my way to pester! I will stop to watch someone I consider to be a accomplished amatuer who has trained multiple high level dogs quicker than I will stop to watch a pro.

Chuck McCall (always has a nice truckload of dogs), Ronnie Lee (along with Bill Morgan has taught me a ton about dog work), Bill Morgan (my best friend and hunt test companion... absolutely a natural and I hated to see him leave the game), Chris Akin (his record stands for itself), Barry Lyons (even with his recent eye problems his dogs always do the work), Ed Thibodeaux (probably forgot more about dogs than I know), Charlie Jurney (I have only watched him at the Grand but always gets the most out of his dogs), and Bill Autrey (sure takes away the excuses for hollering at dogs and really knows how to assess how to run a test and is always willing to help you out).

Barry will show you EVERY thing about a test there is. I always like to be in his flight, and watch him work a test. As a judge, you better get ahead of him in a hartbeat, cause if he senses weakness, he'll roll over you. As a handler, you can sit back and watch him run 8, and if you got a question about how to run the test, or what you can do, you simple weren't paying attetion. Akin is slick, and the dogs to back it up. Roger Morton is the king.... roger only pushes where he needs to push, has good dogs, excellent reflexs, and is always a professional and polite, even when hes been wronged.
I think something intresting of note, EVERY professional handler listed in this thred, is a true professional in every sense of the word. You'll never wait on any of them, they are always on time and willing to do what it takes to make the hunt go smooth. Im actually pretty honored to have my name listed with these guys.

For just all out poops and giggles, you cant beat a day with steve riggins. travis

Since I started judging I have had the opportunity to observe all who have been mentioned. They all taught me something about the test I set up that I did not see in it when I set it up.

But I will say, I have learned more about handling by judging with Trav than anything. No matter what your doing, judging or running, always be willing to keep an open mind and ask questions.

like travis said there are lots of great handlers out there.i have judgeed lots of test if you sit and watch any one of the pro.s will show you what you need to know about a test. But to watch one it would be chris akins or steve vires they are smooth and will not waste there time nor yours as a judge . you realy want to watch pro,s and others run take the time to go watch the grand and be there for opening morning it is amazing .

I really enjoy watching Tammy run her dogs she seems to have so much fun. One most common things I see at HT is that the Handlers listed might have a higher standard for their dogs than the judges might. My favorite person to watch would be Copiah Creek you never know how he will arrive at the line. I have seen him being brought to line and I have seen him caring them from the line. When I heard at the last West MS hunt test that somebody was neck deep in the water in started I said to myself dang Allen was just here that can’t be him.
