E Collar ?

I have a 4 month old puppy and I was wondering how old a dog should be before you start using an e-collar?

It depends on who you ask. My thought is sometime after they get permanent teeth, and have been through formal OB. Get a copy of Mike Lardy's "Total E-Collar Conditioning" or similar product before you use an e-collar.

I have not decided yet if I am going to use an e-collar yet or not but I will definitely get the book and form an opinion after that. Thanks for the response.

I normally do not use one until after I have everything down solid with a check cord and heeling stick. Now, pup might wear one that is turned off during this time, but I do not use the e-collar to train with; I use the e-collar later on as a means to enforce an already learned behavior.

An e-collar used in a bad manner can ruin a dog.

I think he should have it on when your working with him. Make sure the e-collar is not on and leave the transmitter in the truck. May help prevent collar wise dog.
