Has anyone ever hunted the big black river bottom between jackson and vicksburg I've got a contract on about 1400 acres and I was wondering if I should sell it or hang on to it.
just don't know what ducks do down there I've always hunted in Tallahatchie county but I'm curious about what the ducks do down there.

Used to hunt it a lot when I was at HJC back in the early 70's. When the water gets out, there are usually some ducks around; you have to work hard to find them, though. A few beaver holes hold ducks at times in the early season (usually a bunch of woodies), but it's real hit or miss for big ducks. The only way to know is to run the river and watch for ducks working over the river. Then you have to know whose property they are on and get permission. But, man, there is some good catfishing on that river all the way up or down from Goodman. You ever get down for any of the parties at Pickens Beach?

Peewee, yes I am from Vicksburg. Heard all this speculation on the Big Black and it kind of caught my attention, esp. when I heard ya'll mention Bovina.
Hey 4-Eyed Gadwall, the Big Black can be great for hunting ducks, but it has been my experience that there must first be alot of ducks in the state before the riverbottoms and backwaters of this river get alot of ducks. If this winter gets as cold as everyone is saying it is then I wouldn't dare let your option on this land go!!! The hunting pressure is usually minimal and at times I have seen ducks in the Big Black river bottom unlike anywhere else I have ever been, but it must get cold enough up north to push the ducks down here, and the stages on this river need to be a little higher than average. I am sure your mainly interested in hunting big ducks, but also there are a great many places up and down this river where you can really work on the wood ducks. Hope the advice helps!
Johnnyboy~ I don't believe we know each other but if you want someone to get you familiar with this land your thinking about hunting on the Big black in Bovina, chances are I know where it is and a little bit about it.

Hey 2000 and Crow
Crow is exactly correct I hunt the BB in that area, Goodman, Pickens, and Vaughan. You have to hunt the ducks when they are there, but you better get permission first those boy's don't play in that area. Luckly I duck hunt more than I deer hunt and they know that so they don't mind if I duck hunt on them a little.
Crow, Pickens beach is no more, the land changed hands and the owner put up a gate right off Hwy 51, nobody goes their anymore.
