Is that 7 more (12 total), or 2 added on the 5 he is currently serving? I believe it is 7 total, but I can't tell the way it is written in the ever so informative Clarion Ledger.

2 more. He will serve his two sentences at the same time or "concurrently". The first a 5yr. and the second a 7 yr.

They could have given him 20 years and it would not have been enough.

They run concurrently but he doesn't get credit for time already served. So in essence, he's due to get out seven years from today. If the reports are right.
