Re: Snipe???
I have only hunted them once, back in January '06, but lead is legal.
Re: Snipe???
lead is legal. i know snipe hunting is an old joke but i grew up hunting them in the spillway. we would just walk em up, after you jump em if you stop where you are 8 out of 10 times they will make a big circle and come right back where your standing. not much meat but great for hand eye coordination

to me they had a stronger flavor than doves, but i like it
Re: Snipe???
When I lived in florida we would always hunt them after the ducks stopped flying, but we always shot steel since we had been duck hunting. My grandfather always called them swamp quail. I think they are pretty darn good eating. I may have to go pop a few tomorrow.

Re: Snipe???
If this is about Wilson's Snipe, I am a novice. If your question is about Woodcock I've killed a few dozen.
To the best of my knowledge hunting woodcock with lead shot is legal in Ole Miss. It is my understanding that hunting any migratory waterfowl, rails, snipes, etc. you must use non toxic shot. Woodcocks no, snipes yes. Maybe Wingman can add some of his expertise on the subject?
As a side note, Woodcock is fine tablefare! Yes its got flavor, maybe more than Dove, definatley more than Quail, and is down right nuclear compaired to store bought chickken1 When the opportunity arises put them on the table, you wont be dissapointed.

Re: Snipe???
I honestly dont know the answer to this questiion so I googled it. Looks like it is a state by state decison on woodcock and snipe. Not sure what rule is in Missisisppi but I think lead shot is legal if you are hunting snipe only or woodcock only but if you are duck or goose hunting, you cannot have lead on you- PERIOD.
Mr. Tully over in Vicksburg is a world renowned woodcock hunter. Hunts them all over the Delta. Read an article about him a few years back but I googled it and could not find it.
Note that woodcock are migratory, just like snipe. 90% of the woodcock in North America winter in Louisiana and Mississippi. Woodcock summer way north from Minnesota to Maine and into southeastern Canada as well.
I had a beautiful male woodcock mounted a few years ago. My taxidermist is a great bird man but he said he would not do it again for $500! Too many small feathers and intricate details. Wait til I take him a snipe!
Note that the term "sniper" comes from France for "snipe shooter". Snipe on the wing- not flushing them like quail- but once they are up in the air, are among the toughest of targets, especially on a windy day.

Re: Snipe???
basspro has lo brass winchester steel for like $6 a box. non toxic, kills the crap outta teal and snipe, and don't have to worry about mr green jeans. That'd be the way to go I think. I don't even like lead hulls on my duck fields.... anything to make someone dig, can be a bad thing. travis
