Antique Bamboo Rods

A few weeks ago I was cleaning out my wife's grandfathers old home and found a couple of rod and reels. One is a saltwater outfit: A bamboo rod made by Montague with a Shakespeare "Surf Wonderreel". The other is a Fly Rod: Bamboo (unknown maker) with a Bronson level wind reel. Both seem to be very old. Does anyone know anything about antiques such as these or can tell me where I can find some info on them? I have no clue as I am more up on modern tackle.

Shoot them thangs are so old they can't be worth much. Tell you what, I'll take 'em off your hands and I'll pay the shipping!
Those have to be worth a bunch, but I don't have a clue. What a family treasure, though. No matter what they are worth in money, they will be worth more just in imagining the man who used them.

You might want to check with the guys on the rodmakers email list. Montagues are common and cheap, except for a couple of rare ones. Most of the post WWII rods were made in Japan and run from $50-100 depending on their condition. I'm really not an expert on this but if you are interested in having them restored professionally I would refer you to the rodmakers list. You can get instructions from

at the end of the day, you'll find that the value of knowing that these were in your family and that they are conversation pieces will outweigh any amount that they could be sold for. I have a fly fishing reel that was my Great Granfather's manufactured by the Firestone company...yep - the tire maker. Probably worth $10 to someone but it's priceless in my opinion knowing that he probably yanked a gazillion big ole bull headed pisser oxbow bluegills out of the lake with it. Good luck on your quest!
