I sent an email to Delta Waterfowl and Ducks Unlimited regarding the draining of Nanih Waiya swamp. I thouroughly explained why the mitigation expert said he drained it. And that we were going public with this. I explained I had given up on the MDWFP. Nobody seemed to give a damn there.
Here is DU's response:
Austin,
Your email to DU regarding the Nanih Waiya WMA was forwarded to me and I am pleased to respond. Let me suggest that before you proceed with further public awareness, contact Ed Penny with the MDWFP. Ed is the state waterfowl coordinator and is located at their HQ in Jackson. I’m sure there’s a logical reason for draining that wetland and Ed may be the person to provide that answer.
Thanks and good luck…Chris
Delta Waterfowl:
Hey Austin, I appreciate your concern and I will pass this on the the Main office. I know that John our VP, is at the shot show in meetings. He will be back Monday I think. He is the guy who keeps his finger on the pulse of these things. I will have him give you a call and see where we are on it. Thanks again for the support of conservation.
Thanks,
Scot Marcin
Later on, low and behold I hear from Senior VP out of North Dakota. Just got off the phone with him. He sent this first:
Austin,Thanks for your note. I am currently on the road and in meetings through Sunday but have one of our biologists talking with some folks in MS about what is going on. Let's visit when I get back next week.
John
That goes to show you the difference. I was told by some MDWFP personnel not to contact DU because they would not help or even be interested. Looks like they were right...

I am a member of DU but the only reason I am is because they send me a magazine every month and that is how I look at it. $25 for a DU magazine subscription, not $25 for helping protect wetlands. I hope everything works out for ya.

How can DU or DW be responsible for what the MDWFP does with the land that the MDWFP manages ?

No one said they were responsible, its the lack of intrest that pisses me and others that hunt there off. This Place is a Natural Wetlands and has been since for 50+ yrs and the MDWFP has no intrest in researching/and finding out why why it was drained . The only one who is just as upset about it as anyone is the area manager, no one else from MDWFP gives a dam b/c its not a draw WMA in the freaking delta.

He was the first that Austin called and he didnt do a damn thing and had no real intrest. I contacted Kevin B and Ed both and after they promised to look into it and call me back they did neither. I attempted to contact Kevin several times in the following weeks and he didnt return messages.

My name is Chad Manlove and I work for Ducks Unlimited in Jackson, MS. I've talked with Kevin Brunke, Migratory Game Biologist with the MDWFP. Nanih Waiya WMA is owned by the U.S. ARmy Corps of Engineers and managed for wildlife by MDWFP. It was originally purchased to mitigate bottomland hardwood loss at another site. Within the past couple of years, the drainage ditch leading out of the swamp became silted in from near agricultural field run-off. As a result, standing water killed many hardwood trees on the area. The decision was made to drain the swamp this fall in order to restore the area to hardwoods. This was a WETLANDS RESTORATION decision. Hardwood seedlings must be planted in winter months under dry conditions. They are trying to restore the site, not piss-off duck hunters. In fact, the MDWFP has been aggressively pursuing additonal hunting opportunities for waterfowlers across the state. DU and MDWFP have a very good working relationship. Both groups are concerned about wetlands and waterfowl conservaiton, as well as increased hunting opporuntites. Now, is not the time to quit on DU or MDWFP.

Another D.U. slander that fell short of the whole truth. Just like the D.U. is dropping corn out just above the state line to stop the ducks......all abunch of B.S.
