does any one know what the regulations are on draining wetlands that have been in existance for 40 yearsor more . dont you have to have permits and studies done before you just drain wetlands ? can someone tell me why they drained the swamp at Nani Wayia?

Doc we have been fighting this all year, called the Jackson office and spoke to several people in the waterfowl dept and all we got was BS. We have been hunting that place all our life but not anymore. ITs a pure shame that they are going to be able to get away with it by saying they are going to restore hardwoods. Heck fire its been a freaking wetland since my dad was growing up and hunting down there. Greenheadgrimreaper and I have been thinking about calling DU and DW and seeing if we could get somthing rolling. Its time your group and ours teams up and gets the ball rolling on this even though its prob to late. Sad thing is not enough true hunters down there like you guys and us that would team up and do something about it

The Corps of Engineers regulates the deposition of fill in a wetland. You can drain a wetland as long as you don't place any fill in the wetland. Sort of a gray area, but the Corps regs only deal with deposition or redistribution of fill in wetlands.

You mean to tell me they drained it? Holy smokes, i didnt even know there was a damn holding the waterback. Lost of unhappy gators out there i assure you! i killed bunches of wood ducks out there over the years!

I thought there is some rule that if you destroy wetlands like that, that you have to purchase an equivalent wetland property and donate it. Meaning no one could ever drain/destroy that property. Kind of like trading out properties. I thought I had been told that somewhere along the way. (Might be way off)

All I know is that yall need to do something about it!!!!!!!!!!!


Only thing I can do is give you a sig on a petition or something, but at this point I dont think it will help.

Call whomever replaced Bobby Moody as the Representative. Get a politician involved and it will either get better or worse.

We have done everything we know to do. I have a ton of pics back when it had water, I will get greenheadgrimreaper to take some of it now and we will post them up for all to see. Yall check his post out on the gen. page.

You need to call the corp of engineer regulatory office for the mobile district and file a formal complaint. They are required by law to investigate all complaints, and I can assure you they will be thourough.

I have been hunting this my whole life also. there is still water but not where most people hunted. It is indeed a sad and misfortunate event.

There's a bunch of stuff buried in that swamp that doesn't need being found. Needs to be left wet.

it might be water on yalls side down around burnside but at the mound I walked through all my holes opening wkend in work boats. We got 3 hunts in there when we got the 8" rain but it drains down fast. And Bank you are absolutely right.

Yeah we still got plenty on this side of the mayhew. At one point we had to much because of all the water. I have not hunted it but a couple of times this year. Got private land to hunt also.

And yes from some of the things i have been told Bank you are correct.
