Handi Rifle Upgrade?
I don't own a handi rifle but I talked with a guy today that was telling me he has a H & R handy rifle in 45-70 and he said he heard or read, cant remember exactly, that he can send it back to the company and they can modify it and he can then purchase different barrels for it for like $80.
He said he really wanted to get him a .308 barrel for it.
Has anyone heard of this?
I figured this was worth posting. Anyone

I don't know if the $80 is right, but yes you can get it fitted for other barrels. You have to send it in.

I thought 80 sounded cheap, i was wondering whether or not he was mislead or I misunderstood. Maybe to have it fitted to another barrel is 80 plus another barrel.

It's actually $90 for the 308 barrel and $15 fitting fee and $15 shipping and handling plus whatever it costs for you to ship it to them. You can get an order form from there website http://www.hr1871.com/Support/accessoryProgram.asp. All in all a reasonably cheap gun
Re: Handi Rifle Upgrade?
Im sending my old man's 45.70 off to get a 7-08 barrel put on this week. Gonna give it to a nephew who needs a rifle. I think the website said it was $87. Seems very reasonable to me. Turn around time is 6 weeks or so from what i hear.

so do you get the old barrel back so that you can interchange them or is just stuck with the new barrel until you send it back in.

You keep your original barrel. You only send in the forearm and receiver.

wow that is cheap. ok so are they easy to interchange once this is performed? That would be the way to go if what everyone is talking about them doing away with muzzleloading season all together

One screw holds the forearm on, nothing too it.
Re: Handi Rifle Upgrade?
better get in a hurry becasue they are discontinuing that deal with replacing barrels....
Thank GOD for everything!
Re: Handi Rifle Upgrade?
hate to dredge up an old topic, but anyone done this? About to send one off to get fitted for another barrel and was curious about scope accuracy after swapping between barrels? I read on another forum about them possibly being off zero...
I would think once they were zero'd in on each barrel nothing else like swapping out the barrels (unless they get bumped hard) would cause it to lose zero.

Re: Handi Rifle Upgrade?
You have to have the forearm screw torqued down the exact same each time. If not you will affect the zero on the scope.
I have sent mine in twice. No major issues.

did it when they first moved from garner to illion plant under remington - MISTAKE to be the pioneer, took forever. they take calls in n.carolina, so they really don't have a clue about your rifle (canned answers - it will be a couple of weeks for over 2 months) - except for a couple that at least sound like they know what they're talking about....
sb2 frame in .270 that was a tack driver and got .444 fitted. .270 now fits a lil bit sloppy (but.444 cuts holes!). looking for a used sb2 frame now to get .270 mounted up with a better fit - still be cheaper than buying 2 new rifles but not much. really need to shoot after changing barrels and just got to be a pain, although each had it's own scope so it shouldn't be off, but it was off enough to bother me.

Re: Handi Rifle Upgrade?

there's a site you can get on to check the progress - need your order # from customer service. doesn't do a great job, but you'll know what stage it is in (check in, workman's bench, testing, etc) may can find the site in remington.com and search for order tracker. if not it is in the faq on graybeard's handi site.
